Personal and Professional Development My Name Course Instructor Institution City/State Date : 1.1 describe two self-managed learning approaches and evaluate how they can help you to lifelong development Self-managed learning entails self motivated learning where the learners set their own goal by evaluation of their learning purposes and defining ways of achieving such goals (Ottewill 2002, p. 12). This type of learning enables people to learn diverse topics that explore different situations in the world. There are many approaches to self-managed learning but people choice the best approaches that suits their situations. Persons can learn through friends, internet, and newspapers among others. Self-managed learning helps individuals in designing the strategies they think are the best in learning. However, with the advancement in the new technologies, learning has taken a different direction with many people now preferring self-managed learning to contemporary learning where students learn under roof or classroom. Approaches to self-managed learning One of the best approaches is through conferences and seminars (Ottewill 2002, p.13). There is a lot of knowledge exchange in conferences and seminars that individuals can benefit from. On the other hand, these media provides individuals with the platform of presenting their knowledge in certain areas to others. Those who had no slightest idea on the areas that their colleagues present in the conferences and seminars get to learn new things. Moreover, seminars improve confidence and the way people present themselves. One of the skills that individuals can learn in seminars is how to communicate. A communication that involves a large crowd needs individuals with good communication skills. Furthermore, conferences and seminars help individuals in developing confidence when delivering public speeches as well as good presentation skills that are detrimental to the organisation. The second approach is the use of internet in learning. The use of internet has become viral in the modern world and it has the best way of communication in the current generation. There are search engines that provide the users with all the answers that they need. On the other hand, individuals can learn in the internet by reviewing articles related to management studies, risk management and risk management. The availability of eBooks (Google books), online magazines or newspapers and social media sites like facebook and twitter has taken self-managed learning to a higher level. Self-managed learning enables individuals to have good personal experiences that result in lifelong learning in both professional and personal contexts (Ottewill 2002, p. 14). 1.2 select two lifelong learning approaches and suggest how they could be encouraged to enhance lifelong development in the personal and professional context Lifelong learning entails continuous personal learning that leads to professionalism (Ottewill 2002, p. 15). Individuals can engage in personal evaluation and assessment as a way of achieving lifelong learning if they consider SWOT analysis (Harrison 2002, p. 20). In this context, my strengths include good listening skills, friendliness and I am ambitious. However, my sole weakness is that I develop stress when tired which I can control through enough sleep and engaging in physical exercises. Moreover, the opportunity that I have is furthering my education while my uncertainties or threats include money and recession. Self-managed learning can help individuals develop a clear a comprehensive SWOT analysis while incorporating other tools like Continuing Professional Development and self-reflective learning (Gold & Thorpe 2010, p223). Self-reflective learning entails reviewing certain opinions, personal understanding, judgements and actions that a person is willing to undertake properly and honestly. This helps in linking professional development with practical things that an individual has learned through his or her course of life. Reflective learning helps in developing new skills as that the work place presents as well as developing inter-personal skills among the workers through responsibilities that the management assigns to them. On the other hand, CPD is a combination of approaches, techniques and ideas that will help in developing and enhancing personal learning. This in turn encourages growth to a level of professionalism by effective planning and evaluation of the learning activity. 1.3 assess the benefits of self-managed learning to the individual and organisations Benefits of self-managed learning to the individual Since self-managed learning entails management of initiatives of learning, it has some advantages to individuals who are about to graduate from learning institutions. One of the benefits that individuals get from self-managed learning is the development of team work spirit (Ottewill 2002, p. 15). In this context, the individuals learn through an interactive environment. Learning by interaction with other people helps in developing extra ordinary skills on team work. Since this topic entails management that involves organisations, getting used to interactive environments is advantageous to the new job recruits. Moreover, the learners get to develop good presentation skills. Conferences and seminars expose students to the use of projectors thus introducing to the world of technology in management. Nonetheless, the students also gain confidence that may be later helpful when presenting to the management of the organisations. Most organisations nowadays look for individuals who can present them well in the competitive business environment. Finally, self-managed learning is vital in developing communication skills that are integral to objectives that organisation develop (Ottewill 2002, p. 15). When presenting to the audience, the student gets to gauge his or her ability to deliver to the group of people. Concisely, in self-managed learning, some individuals may become leaders of certain groups which in turn develops their leadership skills that eventually becomes vital when organisations offer them the chance of working with them(Megginson & Whitaker 2007, p.115). Benefits of self-learning to the organisation Throughout the course of self-learning, individuals learn the process of decision making (Ottewill 2002, p15). Working in an organisation presents an individual with an array of decision that they have to choose from. What determines the success of any situation is the ability of an individual to choose from among the alternatives that the management presents to him or her. Besides, self-managed learning makes the students understand the importance of ethical issues through moral judgement that they have developed from their personal experiences (Gold & Thorpe 2010, p. 177). Moreover, self-learning helps the organisation in problem solving through transferable skills that individuals bring to the organisation. Self-learning results to individuals who are flexible and can apply their skills to any critical situation that the organisation may be facing. PAPER 2 2.1 compare the professional standards and organizational requirements against current skills and competencies. To do so you will need to conduct your own SWOT analysis and include as an annex your curriculum vitae as an evidence of a source of your current skills and abilities National Health Service as an organisation always makes sure that their employees meet their objectives. The objectives must always be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound) (Health People.Gov 2013, p.1). NHS does this by evaluating expectations and qualities that they require from employees and compare them to those of the existing employees. The organisation requires staffs that have potential skills on leadership, team player and time management. On the other hand, the health service sector requires staff with communication skills since staff deal with patients from different backgrounds. National Health Service objectives (Health People.Gov 2013, p.1) Providing its people with a variety of quality services Shaping services and ensuring these services revolve around the needs as well as preferences of patients, families and careers Quick response to various needs of different people Valuing and supporting its staff. Providing a comprehensive range of services to the people MY PERSONAL SKILLS I have outstanding skills in writing, listening, researching, and making friends which will match with the expectations of the organisation (NHS). I can transfer these skills to other team members so that we can harness our ideas for better performance at the organisation. I have a caring attitude towards other people and this compassion to others is what NHS what expects from its employees. Moreover, I look forward to develop my business skills so that they can help me in NHS since my objectives aim at improving the business department of any organisation that I aspire to work in. NHS strives to provide quality health services in all units of the organisation, from health to finance department as well as strategic level and human resources. 2.2 after carrying out a skills audit of your current abilities with the skills needed to perform the role well; identify own development needs and the activities required to meet them Training at the work place will help me set out tasks that will improve my work performance (Gold & Thorpe 2010, p.261). Moreover, I will engage in monitoring my time management as a way of developing a good leadership skill, from the beginning to the end of my task. Communication is an area where most people have problems thus I will engage in interactive seminars and presentations in certain issues and topics. However, a good personal strategy will help me meeting my development needs and activities (Ottewill 2002, p.16). I will engage myself in reading more books and newspapers related to financing, management and human resource. On the other hand, the Harvard Business Review will help me understand how other organisations improve their performances. In addition, personal development through research in the current and future developments in areas of concern will help me evaluate the organisation environment politically, economically, socially, and technologically (PEST) (Megginson & Whitaker 2007, p.6) References Gold J, Thorpe R & 2010, Mumford A, Leadership & management Development, 5th edn, London, CIPD.
