Running Head: Workplace Report Student number: Student name: Introduction 1.1 Purpose These report is purposed at discuss what is actual and what would expect the organization which I will select to be managed by using the relent theory of Productive management of diversity/cross cultures and Developing and managing effective teams. This will be carried out by identifying developing and managing effective teams and finally how diversity/cross-culture is managed. 1.2 Structure. The report will introduce the organization that I have chosen giving its background and the reason of selecting it. I will also look at the key concepts about Productive management of diversity/cross cultures and Developing and managing effective teams which will be explained. Then recommendations about what the organization should do in achieving the effective team and dealing with productive management of diversity/cross cultures 1.3Background I have selected my father’s consumer electronic supply company as the focus organization which is one of the largest consumer electronic company in China. I have two reasons for selecting my father’s company. First, there are more than 200 employees in the organization which are the following leaders which include top-level manager such as president and vice president, mid-level managers which are in charge of departments and sections such as accounting department, , transport department, repair and maintenance department and procurement and supplies. There is also first-level manager who is in charge of customer services, accountants and cleaners, and employees. Secondly I have work on experience in the consumer electronic company whereby I have a clear understanding of all the departments and the role each department plays in the organization. 2.0 Productive management of diversity/cross cultures It is evident that when culture diversity is applied then there is full utilization of skilled labor of the organization which results to rapid and stable growth of the organization. Cross cultural is where people come together from different background with different culture. While diversity/cross-cultural management is where people from different background meet, interact, fit into each other’s culture and deal with their differences. Cross-cultural management has three factors that contribute to its prominence these includes; growing cultural diversity of the population, globalization(Adler, 2002; Morrison,1996) and fairness legislation(Gross-Schaefer, Florsheim & Pannertier). Cross-culture management means the collective arrangement of the mind which defines the difference of members in one group from another group (Hofstede, 2001:5). Hofstede continues with the explanation of mind which means the head, heart and the hands for thinking, feeling and acting with a result of beliefs, attitudes and skills. Cross-cultural management helps to explain, understand and improve people’s behavior in a company where the stakeholders are from different cultures. 2.1 Developing and managing effective teams When developing a team planning must be done carefully and each person have to be considered as a distinct entity in the team (Raven Lebeau). In the process of forming a team each member of the team agrees that they are going to work together with a common goal hence dependant of each other(D.P Noel). Raven (2011) suggests that a team should have members with different skills which are desirable in achieving the goals of the team. A team normally comprises a group of persons. There are various ways in which managers develop and manage effective teams. A team must have good communication within itself and with the external bodies, have one commitment or identity as a team and they should have clear goals which are achievable within time and budget. The team should also be able to have internal and external support, trust among the team, Members in the team have good negation skills in addition to having appropriate leadership that will help the team achieve its goal smoothly and with ease and finally members in a team should have skills that are relevant to achieve goals of the team. Having these feature assures the company that it has the ability to increase rather than go down and to the members that of having the ability to work effectively in a team (Raymond Lim). In managing a team the 80/20 rules should applied where spending 80% of your time with 20% of your team (Sue A. Sponte). Successfully handling the hard situations or times when you are under pressure is a key success to any business and managers or team leaders can to this by having effective communication and ability to handle each member in the best way. Many teams now days start working without having set clear start points and end points or responsibility to each member. Having clear star and end points will clearly indicate the team’s effort and each individual’s contribution in achieving the goals. It is worth pointing out that if the team has overall support in creating and managing an effective work team. A tam is considered successful if the team leader is has the ability to use the right skilled personnel within the team in performing tasks that require their expertise. Every member in a team should be willing to work and accomplish their task within time schedule, members should also have equal tasks and avoid situations where some members are overworked this situation may led to conflicts and poor performance in the team. A team which manages itself performs better than one with appointed leader because the performance of the team may be affected by the expectations or the moods of the manager. An effective work teams can only work and effectively solve a given problem if they have relevant training and guidance (Raymond Lim). Knowing each other as a team can help solve problems as a team or know what each can do best where the team can decide to have a balance between tasks. It is important for each member of a team to consider and focus on their talents and what they can do best (Dolores Moore). Some of the expected advantages of an effective team are generally achieved when a team is able to plan their activities, they are able to implement, and monitor and effectively maintain the plans. In achieving these advantages a team should be able to; have consultation regularly, participation of each member of the team, considering views and ideas of each member, proper communication where information is given to the team as a whole and o individual members (Dolores Moore). Active listening is very important in making sure that the information is not misunderstood or even missed completely. Cosmetic type of listening should be discouraged because members who pretend to be listening and they are not may not even ask a question or will not accomplish assigned task in a team (Tim Taylor). Tim Taylor provides some tips on how you can improve the listening skills of the tem as a team leader or a member addressing the team. These steps include; maintaining direct eye contact with the audience, you should remain relaxed, visualize what the person is trying to say, responding should be after other person has finished speaking, use body language and facial expressions, body movement and posture to enhance communication and finally, summarize your points and confirm if they have understood. Conclusions and Recommendation In conclusion it is therefore important to understand that having resources, team composition, work design and variables which influence a team are the major components of an effective team. The key elements of high performing team includes; trust and respective, creativity and innovation, good communication, full participation of members, clear start and end point of every task and being able to effectively handle a problem as a team. There are five stages when undertaken then a team is considered effective, these stages include; having a plan on each and every task that a team has to solve, where everything is well organized , implemented according to the plan and monitoring and maintaining the plan. Having proper or relevant training and guidance impacts the way a team effectively tackles a problem. There are principles that should be adhered to by a team to for it to be effective these includes; regular consultation, participation of all team members, being able to listen to ideas and views of each member in the team, making sure that members have full access to relevant information and proper feedback to the team members. Diversity management is more than fairness legislation compliance. There have been improvements by cross/diversity culture centre in the most organizations working on relationships between employees which are from different culture background (Hofstede, 1997:5). Hence culture diversity is fundamental in the cross/diversity cultural management.
