The functionality over the participative arrangements in regards to the management of Occupational Health and Safety. Identifying all kinds of illustrations and strict hazards and assessing and controlling risks that prevail in this context. I am also dealing with the maintenance of quality of Occupational Health and Safety; for the betterment of management and all round development of it. I have chosen my experience in a restaurant as the basis of all these analysis and feel that these experiences are worth the analysis. The application of Health and Safety system in an Organisation is matter of concern in every small and big industry and thus it is equally very vital to have more awareness about it. I am trying to have a very pragmatic point of view with subjective analysis and am going to report about the issues that I have faced during my job as a waiter in one the restaurants. The RepoRt Introduction Occupational safety and health (OSH), is a section that is very much cross-disciplinary it is for the purpose of safety, health and welfare of employees in an organization (Bill Taylor, 2005). The main goal Occupational Safety and Health Act is to check that all the employers whether small or big are providing all kinds of safety and security measures to their employees. As per James Roughton (2002), there are many reasons for which it becomes very important to have all kinds of occupational safety and health standards in the organisational sector. I have worked in a restaurant and have discovered many hazards that make the work place unhealthy and insecure. These hazards are all from all sides, that is to say they are concerned from moral, economic and legal perspectives. As a discussion here I would like to describe all those situations that demands for and absolute administrative application and a safe and healthy atmosphere in the workplace. Manual stress I was working as a part time waiter and have faced the many things that are worth mentioning. I will like to start with the manual tasks that were imposed upon me and my colleagues. All the workers were not given enough facility to minimise their efforts. The physical stress was heavy, even after being a part time waiter I used to get very much exhausted and that is very much tiring for me. Every work is manual there were no provision for equipments like trolleys or big trays to minimise these efforts. Kneeling, squatting, carrying heavy plates were part of the job. The machines and equipments are not at all adequate and that led to the difficulties related to muscles, body ache, mental stresses and lots of physical troubles. Added to these entire if there is a slip or a fall of any of the utensil and it gets destroyed the money was deducted from the salary. It is very strange but as such there is no other way. Even if we are very particular about all the things, they are always out of control. Most of the cases use to be on weekends and people use to throng all around. These were more troublesome to handle and more accidents used to take place. The floors were slippery and the stairs were very much upright. Balancing is like a big problem and there is also the tension reaching every table in much faster wait. The administrative section was much strict and that caused more tension in the work. If a waiter is found slower than the rest then he gets fired immediately. Being a famous restaurant and for having the most delicious food, there is hardly a day when any seat gets vacant. The rush is heavy, but the maintenance of working atmosphere is not good, not even above that the facilities were very much limited. As I am making an analysis now, I can realise what kind of place I was working in. the restaurant must be following the same kinds of strategies and the waiters must be having tough time. Emergency Training While keeping an eye over the physical stresses I also try to check out the security arrangements as has been made for the employees. The restaurant though was making us work more without any machinery support or without any equipment, yet was particular about undertaking the security section. There was this security surveillance system and that was the best thing about this restaurant. The waiters who were permanent workers were given lots of facilities. They were even trained for the purpose of dealing with rude and aggressive customers. They were also trained to deal with the violent kind of situations. There was also the precautionary assistance for all those employees who were involved in some violent incident. The restaurant owner was very particular in giving the person all medical facilities along with financial supports. The preparations were also made to deal with robberies too. As the owner of the restaurant never believed in handing over the cash to the robbers, he inspired his employees to fight for such incidents. All kinds of arrangements and assistance were made available of any emergency like this. Fire fighting There were all kinds of security arrangements taken for hot parts equipments. Right arrangements of insulators were made and there is the automatic oil filtration system is used. Placements of fire extinguishers were done with emergency availability. In case of fire or anything related to burns are taken well care of. The management proceedings for any emergency call are prompt. The smoke detectors with automatic water sprinklers are placed in various placed. Even the uniforms that were given to us were protective shells from fire. These were clothes that were cosy and at the same time very much secured in case of fire. However to get out of the restaurant during emergency is a big trouble. The doors were small and there was no provision for any kind of emergency exit. The walls were all very concrete and the hustle and bustle has got every chance to create a massacre. The rescue provisions were limited and there was no chance of jumping from the terrace. However I have never faced such a situation there in the restaurant. It is now when I look at the presumed scene I can well understand the situations. Age Maintenance The physical labour as has been considered as the major set back of that job, I too tried to check out some other aspects. While making and analysis of the electrical equipments I have discovered that the restaurants always used to have through check up and testing of every inch of the electrical arrangements. Even the manager was so particular that he placed some boards near all the electrical equipments regarding the avoidance of water to them if some accident occurs. This was very useful and the customers were also made conscious about all kinds of emergencies (Joseph Ladou, 2006). All kinds of damage plugs and sockets used to get replace din the shortest notice and that was the reason that accidents from electrical equipments was not at all a case in the restaurant in its 16 years of service. This was no doubt a secured place to be. Material Safety Data Sheet The employees were given these types of securities. They were all of different stage groups and different backgrounds, but when it comes to the matter of mass security everyone is well trained to meet them. The employees were all of correct age there is none who is below the age the management was very particular in making the selection of the employees. Even as a part time waiter I was asked to submit my age proof certificate. These types of precautions were all very obvious and there was no chance for child exploitation of any kind of legal intervention in the same. The securities were even tighter in case of all kinds of chemicals that are used in the restaurants. Being a place to eat there is literally no such possibility of having any accident from chemicals, but the store keeper is instructed well not to mess up with any of the chemicals. They are all well packed and are used with al carefulness. All the permanent employees are even trained about the hazardous substances and were provided with Material Safety Data Sheet that is MSDS. This added advantage made me think that that place more secure and safer. Medical Facilities There was a compulsion to have a first aid box all along. Having the Civil Hospital just next door, the purpose of security and immediate medical attention was well served. The manger in particular used to check all the apparatus and was insisting for the maintenance of it. He even arranges doctors if some emergency appears among the customers or the employees. Though I felt that the equipments in the first aid box were not adequate, but having a hospital so close solves all problems. I have experienced a serious trouble in the restaurant. It was the matter of evacuation due to sudden earth quake. Every single person was running but the doors and the lobbies were making the evacuation problematic. Being very small people were stepping on each other and the crew in the kitchen was stuck there. They could not manage to come out of the kitchen due the rush among the customers. Conclusion As a matter of fact it is really very important to have all the safety measures in a workplace. The health and safety should be the primary concern of the employer. It is very important that you feel secured in your workplace and thereby have the zeal to perform well (Mark Aldrich, 1997). Apart from all kinds of increments and bonuses it is also very vital to give the employee the medical assistance in the time of need. Financial support sometimes demands for moral and social security. All these needs to be well maintained and the company need to be aware of it. For a definite security in a workplace all the members of management unit and the workers unit must have the transparency within the. As in my case for every problem of mine in the restaurant I was unable to approach the manager. I always use to tell all my grievances and the needs to my team leader and he used to convey the message to the manager. Most of the time they were rejected but the major troubles was always sorted out. I was also given advance to take admission in one of the evening classes for my studies.
