Financial Narrative George is the of the extraordinary man working as the human resources manager in Mastermilk Company that deals with processing and distributing of milk products. George is the kind of man who can be described as generous in every aspect of his life including to his colleagues at work. Most of the times he makes decisions that negatively affect the companys performance especially when he allows a number of them to be out of work. Many of the employees prefer going to him whenever they need a day off to run their errands with excuses such as a sick relative or a school function. George has great ideas for the company such as the use of technology to automate most of the operations but he fears the reaction from his seniors and other stakeholders. He fears that the other employees will reject his views since they fear losing their jobs to technology. As a result, George has kept his ideas to himself and left the company to run and operate manually in many areas that can be automated. George is a hardworking man who is passionate of his job especially in recruitment and training to equip the new employees with the information concerning the company. He is a person and handles his juniors with a high degree of professionalism. The top management also admires his work and allows him to handle most of the companys functions and represent the company in many business forums. His way of handling cases concerning work ethics and behavior among the employees is quite impressive to both the management and the staff. He is the kind of a person who believes in punctuality and many times, he arrives in his office as early as 6.30 am to beging his busy day’s work. He believes in management qualities such as the relationship between management styles and organizational effectiveness (Yoo, Ji-Chul and Young 260). His kindness and generosity makes him vulnerable to manipulation by the other managers and his junior employees. However, some employees and other managers have taken advantage of his kindness to skip work or engage in other activities during working hours. For instance, John, the senior manager in the company always delegates some of his duties to George whenever he wants to be out on his private businesses. Many times john brags that George, the generous manager, does almost all his work in the office. In fact, John says, "I do not need to remain in the office for ten hours as somebody can do my work perfectly and handle all the urgent issues in my office. As a matter of facts, I need to give him a few instructions and the work is done in a few minutes. I just put it this way; George I need to rush somewhere and, therefore, need your assistance in my office. Please attend to any issues that might need my participation as I need to go somewhere and come back in a few minutes." .okay, sir, I will attend to any issues as you attend to your emergencies. “Just give me the necessary documents and materials to enable me carry out the activities”. George would reply. Once the manager leaves, George would do all his office tasks until he comes back. Sometimes the manager would report to work the following day meaning George would work on his official matters for the whole day. In this case, John, the manager, takes advantage of George’s generosity and kindness to skip his official duties and run his personal businesses. George also helps other employees who come to him for permission to be off duty, which has led to an increase in absenteeism in the company. One of the employees by the name Carol gives several excuses anytime she wants to absent herself from work by feigning sickness of her little baby. In a month, carol takes an off to take the baby to hospital five times and one wonders whether the baby does not get well. George does not question her or refer her to the senior managers and processes her leave within a short time after, which carol walks away smiling. Once she knocks the George’s office, Carol says, “Please sir I need to take my sick daughter to the doctor. She had a high fever this morning and cried throughout the night. I will not take too long as I will report back immediately she gets treated”. Just take all your time and seek treatment for your daughter, her life is more important than any other activity. Fill the leave for and bring it for signing and approval for your leave but make sure you report back as agreed.” George would reply. George never says no to his colleagues or managers and does anything that they request from him leaving him very exhausted at the end of the day. He does not know that his actions are a weakness and many people take advantage of it for their own benefits. The actions have led to the decline in the company’s performance as many of the employees lack commitment as they can absent themselves from work using simple excuses. Another case involves George and some of the new employees during training that makes it take a long time to accomplish. Once the new employees realize that the manager is easy to manipulate, they give excuses relating to their health, which in turn delays the training period. Some employees feign sickness especially when they arrive late for work and George does not take a second thought to find out the truth. Philip, a freshly employed employee absents himself with the excuse of having a toothache and visiting a dentist. Several times Philip does not perform his duties as a sales person as his tooth is ever aching and George does not see any problem with that. Philip has a unique way of approaching the human resource manager holding his cheek as he stammers “Sir mmm..am..am.. feeling a lot of pain. I have a terrible toothache and need to see the dentist for treatment. I really cannot hold it longer. I really need a day off for treatment and recovery”. George being a kind man does not question the employee and does not get concerned of the frequency of the toothache. In fact he just replies, “Okay, see your doctor and get treatment then come back. Just do not worry about your duties as someone will take over during your absence”. Similar cases happened with Susan and Peter who absented themselves feigning sickness of their relatives and burials for their friends. One day George was going through the employees’ files, found so many letters for leave, and realized that some of them were absent from work for more than five days in a month. The discovery made him to rethink of his character and for the first time, he felt that his kindness was too much and was contributing to the company’s poor performance. Sales were decreasing each month depending on the number of employees who absented themselves from work. George decided to take his annual leave and reflect on his generous character and its effects on the company and his personal life. He gathered a number of reading materials on employee management and his independence as a human resource manager. He learned that he should never fear the reaction of his colleagues at work whenever he fails to grant them whatever they want. He should also be free to give his ideas that can be beneficial to the company. He also attended some business education forum on management and realized that all through he had not lived his independent life but allowed others to control him. He accepted the opinions from his colleagues and never thought his ideas were of any importance. After studying several materials on personality, management, and self-reliance, George decided to change his character and stand firm. When he returned to work after his leave, he was a changed man and his colleagues and other employees could not understand his sudden change in character. He was fully independent and never allowed anybody to manipulate his way of thinking or resolving problems. He stopped permitting his employees without a genuine reason or taking up his seniors’ jobs as they carried out their businesses. Decision-making is very important in an organization and requires one to have an independent mind to execute one idea. Works Cited Yoo, Ji-Chul, and Young-Wha Lee.
