In order to tackle various complex situations, organizations adopt effective decision in every level of their operational activities. This decision making ultimately supports the organisations to attain their predetermined business objectives and superior competitive position. Contextually, it can be stated that effective decision-making is a systematic process through which business managers select alternative sources and implement it in an efficient manner in order to attain their various business purposes and objectives by a significant level (Harvey, 2007). Police forces of the United Kingdom (UK) can be recognised according to the set of ranks under which several types of departments are operated in an effective manner. The UK police comprise British police force and City of London Police where various sorts of job responsibilities are distributed according to the departmental requirement. In general, the core mission of entire police forces is to prevent crime and protect community people against the conduct of any uncertain criminal assaults. It has been apparently observed that the UK police forces perform their job responsibilities according to the community requirements (Association of Chief Police Officers, 2011). In this paper the key features of an effective corporate decision-making process will be taken into concern. Moreover, the application of this process relating to the UK police force has also being discussed. Workplace Objectives and Issues According to different organisational viewpoints, workplace is generally regarded as an environment where in workers are deemed with identical dignity as well as respect in order to maintain sustainable work culture. In order to preserve a sustainable work environment, it is the responsibility of the top level business managers to understand and resolve the employees’ issues though which organizations can enhance their productivity and deliver superior customer services. In relation to determine the workplace objectives of the police force of the UK, it has been viewed that the core workplace objective of the UK police is to maintain equality that helps them to create and make essential decisions in order to improve their operational performance. In this regard, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) of the UK formulates certain equality objectives in order to evaluate diversity as well as equality amid the entire police forces. Through this aspect, departmental heads understand the behavioural attitudes of entire police force and also comprehend their acceptance capability towards fulfilling their different job responsibilities (Assistant of Chief Police Officer, 2011; Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, 2013). There are several equality objectives that are implemented within the workplace of the UK police force through which they can improve their operational performance. These equality objectives include delivering fair, responsive as well as favourable services to every community member and engaging all the community members in listening as well as responding their respective problems. Additionally, the other objectives comprise developing an effective workforce in order to become more responsible towards the community members and preserving equality standards while performing and delivering services to the community members (Assistant of Chief Police Officer, 2011; Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, 2013). After acquiring a brief idea about the workplace objectives of the UK police force, it has been viewed that at present, UK police department face several types of workplace issues that impose considerable impact upon their operational activities. Since the past few years, ‘Public disorder’ is one of the challenging issues that face by entire British police department. Uncertain criminal activities and violence upon the community members often creates turmoil circumstances in front of police forces. In terms of the issue concerning ‘public disorder’, it has been apparently observed that at present situation, there exist certain communication gap between public concern and the requirements of police activities where task force are not able to deliver appropriate services at the time of uncertain circumstances (Lancefield, Bentley & Cotton, 2011). The other workplace challenge that is facing by the UK police force is that they are incessantly making several deliberate attempts in order to reduce criminal activities from the country but the country is still considered as high crime nation as compared to the other countries of the world. Generally, the basic objective of police forces is to prevent crime and public disorder. Contextually, it has been observed in this modern day context that there pertain certain significant gaps that have been created between public requirement and the police department activities while investigating criminal activities within the nation. This communication gap can be considered as one of the critical workplace issues of the UK police force (Home Office, 2010). Key Features of Effective Corporate Decision Making Effective decision-making procedure is considered as an indispensable function though which operational leaders implement systematic procedure in order to enhance overall team performance as well as deliver safety to every organisational team member concerning their working activities. The key features of an effective decision-making procedure are setting the objectives, outlining the issues, measuring performances, gathering information, evaluating risk management while implementing strategic decisions, selecting appropriate alternatives and making suitable financial as well as narrative reporting (Association of Chief Police Officer, 2011). National Decision Making (NDM) model has been recognised as one of the key features of UK police force through which they make effective decisions in terms of operational activities. This model is also considered as a core aspect for the police force of the UK by which they can efficiently tackle with operational as well as non-operational circumstances in the community. This model is primarily followed by the UK police force especially at the time of spontaneous occurrences. In general, operational decision makers utilise this particular model in order to comprehend the reason of criminal incidents. Through NDM model, UK police force can easily understand their core areas of responsibilities (Association of Chief Police Officer, 2011). The key features of UK police force decision-making have reflected in their mission statement where they committed to provide security to the community members by preventing crimes as well as anti-social behaviours. Moreover, they remain much more committed towards maintaining peace in the community by investigating thorough criminal offences. It has been viewed that the UK police forces always work with integrity, sympathy, politeness and patience in order to attain their operational objectives. Additionally, the UK police always consider fair as well as professional judgment that helps them to take suitable decision at the correct time. UK police force always operate by incorporating with community members and partners by listening s well as understanding their individual perception through which they can build faith and assurance towards them. Prior to any investigation, it is the intelligence department of the UK police force that always gather essential information which comprise overall scenario of any illicit activity. After gathering necessary information, the UK police force evaluates the situation that involves threats as well as risks and develops an appropriate operational strategy in order to solve the cases. Thus, on the basis of the above discussion, it can be stated that through the aforementioned five stages of the model, UK police force developed effective decision-making procedure that facilitates them to resolve any misconduct and to maintain a peaceful environment in the community (Association of Chief Police Officer, 2011). Recommendations Best practice is principally regarded as a management notion that considers effective methods, techniques, procedures and activities through which an organization can successfully accomplish its target or objectives by a greater degree. Through best practices procedures, an organization consistently obtains superior outcomes in order to accomplish sustainable competitive position. Contextually, the UK police force can implement best practices by adopting social media sites. In general, it has been observed that in police department, social media is utilised as a potential source of gathering illegal information. In this context, social media can deliver the UK police forces with full of criminal information that is quite useful for their investigation purpose. Through the execution of social media, the UK police can interact with community members and identify possible criminal assaults through which they can reduce the issue concerning ‘public disorder’. Another best practice that the UK police force can adopt is providing superior training session to their task forces. With the help of this training session, the UK police force can enhance their performance and also make suitable decisions at the time of emergency situations. Moreover, through this training session, the police officers belonging to the UK police force can obtain necessary knowledge regarding investigation and can also learn how to tackle at emergency situations (Composite Project, 2012). In order to implement best practices, the UK police force can initiate several types of pension schemes for the police officers through which they can influence the officers in improving their operational activities. Another mechanism of best practice that can be fruitful for the UK police force is establishing effective communication with the community people. This would eventually help them to identify possible criminal activities and respond efficiently towards the requirement of the society by a considerable level (NPIA, 2011). Conclusion The core notion that emerges from aforementioned discussion is that effective decision- making procedure play an imperative part towards improving the operational performance as well as attaining sustainable competitive position of an organisation. In this regard, it has been observed that the UK police force often adopts effective decisions in every aspect of their operational activities. The NDM model of decision-making can assist the UK police force to conduct suitable investigation at the right time. Though, the UK police force faced certain workplace issues that hampered their reputation in the community, but with the help of best practice techniques, they can easily overcome those issues and most importantly can safeguard the nation at large.
