Leadership vs. Management Leadership is the process of setting new directions for a group; management is the part of leading and controlling according to the business rules and standards. Leadership constitutes planning and organizing projects and operations, allocating the scarce resources effectively in order to optimize the operation (Leitner, 2007). It also includes directing the junior employees on the procedures to follow in their day to day activities. Management usually strategizes on how to improve current activities and to increase the optimum benefits of direct results of these activities. The management always establishes controls to evaluate the efficacy and efficiencies of the business principal activities. Leadership, on the other hand, includes guiding and directing a group of employees towards the best results (Leitner, 2007). It is to have an extensive knowledge and expertise to develop and lucid visions and goals. It typically involves making critical decisions of the organization. It normally takes on preference for strategic direction and long term success of the company. Management considers internally developed information. It internally oriented in its operations. It normally considers factors affecting the company internally on it operations. It always tends to use the company’s internal records and information in making its decisions. Leadership normally renders it focus on the external environment (Leitner, 2007).It is especially interested external factors such as the competitors, social factors and changes in the general economy. This helps in planning long term plans and actions of the organization. Leadership is essentially a diagnosis of climbing to the next level. In itself organization usually has a creative power of defining the next trendy thing of a company. This mainly inspires the company employees in carrying out their duties to complete the present long term plans and goals (Leitner, 2007).The act of defining these long term plans of the organization always brings the sense of the work of employees. Management, on the other hand, deals with how to use the work done efficiently. It always creates various processes and monitors the progress of various departments across the organization. Leadership is a composite of the management operations and activities. It always tries to combine separate piece of the organization in order to establish a united company. To achieve this, they always request the management to give them vital statistics for each of the subdivision managed (Leitner, 2007).They then synthesize these statistics to come up with basic statements. They use these statements to come up with new direction and vision for the problem at hand. Management on itself usually involves situation analysis. They usually break down the entire organization activities into small components, which are easily achievable within a short duration. When leaders support in the company’s vision to the management, the management then analyses the plan level and end up with concrete plans to achieve them(Elearn, 2012). Management is a function that must be effectively used in any type of business. Different people can take part on the company management function. Someone in the company can take care of organizing and planning while another does the budgeting and controlling the company activities and operations’ (Decker, Decker, Freeman & Knorpf, 2009). A third person who is in the higher hierarchy can then play a part in monitoring the progress each department is making towards achieving the set goals. Leadership involves being able to select talent among the company employees, impacting proper skills to employees through regular trainings and bringing staff together occasionally to create and uphold trust amongst themselves. Visionary leadership mainly involves creating new businesses by making maximum use of the resources at the disposal. Operational leadership mainly involves the process of getting ways to implement activities set down in order to achieve the company’s vision (Decker, Decker, Freeman & Knorpf, 2009). All of these two types of leadership deal with doing something different to increase the efficiency of the organization in the market environment. From my own professional experience, I have realized that managers are not always limited by their job title. They can always make use of their management skills in any position they are serving. Management is not an individual task. The management responsibilities can be shared within a group of persons with similar goals. I have realized that a team does not necessarily need best managers in order to generate good management. All what necessary is sharing the load in order to get the best result from the activities we engage in (Elearn, 2012). Through delegation of duties amongst group members, the management burden can be effectively distributed amongst the team members. This gives each of the team members an opportunity to do what interest them (Decker, Decker, Freeman & Knorpf, 2009).Each employee has a resource to help the organization achieve its goals. By giving each, a chance to do what interest them most, managers help staff in effectively carrying out their task. From my experience, I have learnt that leadership is mostly complemented by management. When leaders set the organization vision, the managers help in fulfillment of these visions. Both leadership and management play a key role in the company’s success. They highlight the process t be followed by the staff so as to achieve the organization goals. I have realized that leadership also involves not only setting long term goals and plans, but also motivational role. Leaders must always try their best to motivate the individual employees in their daily work. One of the appropriate ways of doing this is to give each employee a responsibility to play in the company’s operation (Decker, Decker, Freeman & Knorpf, 2009). Secondly leaders should provide adequate training that will develop competence amongst the staff. From what I have experienced in my profession, both management and leadership are indispensable and equally effective in the organization daily operation (Elearn, 2012).This is because plans and budgets, prepared by the leaders in the company, are often manager’s priorities. Managers always make use of the prepared budgets to allocate people towards vision realization. For better results, management must always be exercised in conjunction with a vision derived from a leader. Occasionally manages may have total executive control within an organization, but the line that is followed is always set by the leaders. Successful management helps companies to maximize the performance of its staff (Elearn, 2012).This helps the company to be globally competitive, thus helping it achieve its set goals and objectives. To achieve their long term goals, leaders need highly skilled staff. Good management is vital for improving the use and development of the employee’s skills. They encourage workers to be innovative in their daily work. This boost leadership role of empowering employees by holding regular trainings (Elearn, 2012). This management role helps staff achieve the leadership visionary goals within a set duration. To be an effective leader, the juniors should have trust in. They need to believe on your vision and mission. A leader is expected to set the standards and pace of activities to be carried. For a leader to build trust of his staff, he has to show a good sense of characters (Leitner, 2007).He should have strong believe in success. A leader should have acceptable values. This will enable him to positively influence other staff behavior towards work. A good leader should have appropriate skills. Leaders must totally be devoted in studying new skill. This will enable them come up with appropriate actions to help in company operations. A good leader should be honest; he should be sincere to his staff and also act with integrity. This will help him gain staff trust and support. He should also be competent. He must always base his actions on reason and accepted moral principles (Leitner, 2007).Lastly a good leader must always show confidence in all what he does.
