ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND QUALITY SYSTEM Environmental Management and Quality System Part a) Approaches used by Hallmark in implementing Quality Systems and Environmental Management As a management control, water consumption should be a major concern and awareness has to be raised from the top management level that is the board to the lower levels. An initiative, such as a reduction of water with the help of team members, should be taken into consideration as a quality management system. A team should be formed to discuss the energy management initiatives.

This should be done by all employees to help reduce the costs. Disposal of wastes should be made easy to all employees. Other initiatives of recycling can be outsourced to contractors. Traveling guidelines need to be set to restrict the use of air travel. b) Obstacles, challenges and the success from the implementation process Many roles of sites as an obstacle have been resolved by owning impacts in various areas and engagement of employees in the creation of awareness. Inaccurate measures in valuing of water and agreements of contract, as well as dashboard controlling operations have been put in place as a success strategy.

A restriction of processes as a challenge has been countered with investment initiative as a success. Absorption of outdated goals has been seen through by a thorough update of measures to blend with up to date aspirations. c) Validity and criticisms to the approach Critically looking at the management approach and the quality system, Hallmark is working towards cutting on their water and energy usage. At a greater level, this approach will affect the production target. Considering that they want to manufacture products from recycled paper, the quality of the outcome has not been evaluated.

Part 2 a) Approaches used by Tyco in implementing Quality Systems and Environmental Management Tyco has engaged in evaluation and researching of recycling methods and solutions, as well as in the assessment of life cycle of products. Environmental monitoring using ISO audits has been put in place to evaluate its performance. Tyco has also partnered with other companies through buying of good quality offsets of carbon for the compensation of CO2 emissions. b) Obstacles, challenges, and benefits from the implementation process Tyco is faced with the challenge of cleaning up environments where the companies that it has acquired used or are still operating in.

This period evaluation is hard to predict; it adds to unknown operating costs. Increased production has added the amounts of wastes and gas emissions. As a benefit from the implementation of environmental management, Tyco has reduced about 15% the carbon emissions, wastes and cutting on water and energy consumption. c) Validity and criticisms to the approach Tyco has managed to work on the implementation strategies in the environmental management and to ensure that the quality system is put in place.

Considering the short-term goals they put in place, they have been capable of curbing the carbon emissions by a greater percentage and cut down on the usage of energy and water. The long and short-term goals laid down by Tyco company have been effective considering the number of smaller companies they acquired and the amount of wastes production and gas emissions they have been able to reduce. However, the total prediction percentage of 15% they have put in place is not realistic considering the growing rate the company is experiencing.

This percentage was to be achieved by 2009, starting from 2004. Reference United Nations. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. (2003). Integration of environmental and quality management systems for sustainable development. Geneva: United Nations Publications.
