The military differs from the civilian corporations on this issue in the sense that it has a more proactive approach towards it. Right from the start military owns up the responsibility for orienting the new employees and goes about it in a planned and methodical way.

To begin with, the civilian organizations lack a list of specific goals in their orientation programs (Ukens, 2001, p. 193). The orientation programs are sans any well meditated upon objectives (Ukens, 2001, 193). This could be attributed to varied factors like a lack of confidence in the new hires, no planning in advance, and insensitivity towards the expectations and feelings of the new employees (Friesen, 1998, p. 140). The civilian corporations mostly miss delivering the appropriate information to the new employees (Ukens, 2001, p. 193). They also fail to strike a balance between the needs of the company and aspirations and hopes of the employees.

No proactive and advanced measures are put in place to lessen the anxiety of the employees, entering a new environment. In contrast, the military has a more methodical and well planned approach towards new employees, right to the last detail. Courtesy a psychologically informed recruitment system, the military exhibits a great measure of confidence in an employee, right from the start (Bartram & Dale, 1982). Specific, trained officers are assigned to extend all the requisite information to a recruit, including terms of employment, job expectations, duties, appropriate information regarding the work area settings, the involved procedures, rules and regulations, organizational goals, and safety plans (Department of the Army, 2009).

This is backed by individual development plans for the recruits. So in the area of new employee orientation, the military fares much better as compared to the civilian corporations.
