Production and Operations Management: Benefits of Project Management [N a m e] INTRODUCTION: Projects are important parts of the operations of the organization and requires due attention from the management of the organization in order to make sure that all projects are completed in effective and efficient manner. For this purpose, organizations use different project management techniques and methods. Effective and well planned project management is essential for the organizations in order to make sure that the overall goals and targets of the organization are achieved.

In this paper, an attempt has been made to define and evaluate the importance of project management in order to structure the overall project. For this purpose, different project management tools are presented and explored. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Project management involves different important decisions related to planning, controlling, and organizing the available organizations in order to fulfill the goals and targets of a certain project. Project is a time based collection of different activities which are designed in a manner to present pre defined deliverables and accomplishing certain aims and objectives.

It is important for the organizations to carefully plan and control the all activities and tasks associated with the project in order to make sure that maximum output is generated by utilizing the available sources. Well planned and well through project management makes it easy to structure the project and make sure that none of the resources are wasted and everything is done effectively and efficiently (Dennis, 1-3). IMPORTANCE AND BENEFITS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT: There are several benefits of the project management and it is of high importance for the organizations.

Project manager with the help of different project management techniques and tools can ensure that the project is completed on timely bases and there is optimal utilization of the available resources. With the help of project management the project can be divided into different activities and tasks. This in turn will result in structuring the project and increasing the changes of successfully completing the project (Kerzner, 129). Some of the project management tools used by the project manager in order to structure the project are: Work Breakdown Structure (WBS): With the help of WBS the project manager is able to divide the complete projects in different small activities and works which will generate certain deliverables.

All these tasks and works are required in order to make sure that the overall project is completed. WBS makes it easier for the project management to control different activities and making sure that the whole project team is heading towards correct direction (Milosevic, 152). Project Control Charts: Project Control Charts are used by the project manager in order to monitor and control the progress of the project. With the help of these charts, the project manager can keep a check on all activities and control the overall process and progress of the project (Taylor, 163).

Planning models: Other project planning models and techniques which can be used by the project management are PERT chats and Critical Path Method or analysis (Lock, 188-189). These planning models allow the project manager to monitor and control the time taken by different steps and milestones and the interdependency among different milestones (Lock, 188-189). This in turn allow to manage the time taken by the whole project. CONCLUSION: In order to make sure that project is successfully executed and the desired results and outcomes have been achieved, it is essential to employ effective and efficient project management tools and methods.

The project management tools and activities enable the project manager to construct a structure of the project and evaluate the overall progress of the project team.
