Your full full March 02, Job Shadow In the professional life of any individual, there come a lot of challenges which one must face with full confidence and self-assurance in order to succeed. One of these challenges is to find a perfect job and then to progress in professional field. This stage comes in almost every individual’s life. In my case, I found a perfect job through a job advertisement in a newspaper. When I found that I was well qualified for the post, I applied through sending an email to the company and within two weeks, I got an interview call for the post and, fortunately, I got selected by the company. The name of the company in which I applied for the job was Emaar, a Dubai-based company and the title of the job was Manager Construction department. After selection, I had a training period of three days with the existing General Manager of the company. The experience which I got from the training period helped me a lot in my career success. Before relating my experience as a trainee in the Emaar Company, let us get an introduction of Emaar. Emaar is a Dubai-based public joint stock company which is rapidly becoming the provider of luxurious lifestyles to people. Emaar is not only a part of Dow Jones Arabia Titans Index but is also listed in Dubai financial market. Emaar is based in Dubai since 1997 and is providing a lot of construction services to the people. One of the main objectives of Emaar is to provide the people with luxurious life style which includes building homes, value-added and master-planned communities that satisfy all needs and demands of the customers. Emaar is a well established name in Emirate’s real estate and construction industry. During my training experience, I discovered that all employees of the company were dedicated to the roles and responsibilities regarding their jobs. In Emaar, a complete guide regarding roles and responsibilities is given to every new employee at the time of joining and the employees make full use of the guide in order to fulfill their job responsibilities properly. They know how to achieve the state where they most likely get a promotion. The key towards promotion and career success for all employees is dedication and devotion towards the tasks which are assigned by the management. One thing which is to be noted about the employees of Emaar is that the employees are very enthusiastic about their jobs. They perform each and every task with keen interest and high level of motivation in order to get it completed successfully. All employees abide by the ethical regulations set by the company in order to establish and promote a friendly and dynamic work environment. Mr. Steve McCartt, the General Manager of the Construction Department, was the person who gave me training for three days. The core responsibilities of the General Manager of Construction Department are to build, supervise, and maintain all buildings which are being developed by Emaar. The managers from the construction department manage the selection of general contractors in order to complete various phases of the projects. These phases of projects’ completion include everything from structural metal working to painting and carpeting. The sub departments which are linked to the construction department include house development, construction supervision, and buildings maintenance departments. House development department’s responsibility is to develop the houses and other buildings using proper ratio of construction materials. In Emaar, the responsibility of supervision department is to supervise the development and to check whether the engineers follow the structural design or not. The employees from the supervision department perform a regular check in order to know whether the construction is going according to the quality standards or not. They supervise and co-ordinate the construction process from its beginning to the end. When they find any thing other than the design, they contact the sub contractor and ask him to amend. The responsibility of maintenance department is to maintain the newly constructed houses by making renovations and repairs where needed. All these departments perform their functions in proper collaboration with each other and with the construction department. Another thing which I discovered is that the role of the construction department is of critical importance and it plays an integral role in the success of the company. All employees pay full attention to their work which increases productivity and profitability of the company. They like the way in which the company takes care of its employees by providing them with completely free medical aid, residence, food, transport, and a competent work environment. The also know that the company reserves the right to end their employment if they do not come up to the expectations of the company. So, in order to retain their employment, they work really hard. Gerstel, in his book, asserts that the skills required for the job of General Manager Construction department are planning, directing, coordinating, and to budget a wide range of construction projects. General Manager of the construction department not only plans and directs the construction projects but also is involved in selection, hiring, and retaining specialized and efficient contractors for the company. One of the tasks included in the construction department is to plan the housing schemes in all newly developed housing sectors in Dubai. These housing schemes are developed according to the needs and demands of the public in order to provide them with premier life style. The tasks of knowing the demands of the public and then advertising the new housing schemes are carried out by the marketing department of the company. The Employees of the construction department daily get engaged in a variety of tasks including reading scheduled activities of the day, scheduling tasks related to each activity to be performed, and taking appropriate measures in order to complete those tasks which are then performed by the employees according to the scheduled course of actions. After that, the lists of achieved targets are created which are then handed over to the database department. The employees of the construction department plan their day by looking for the targets which they have to meet. They schedule all activities according to the nature of the targets to be achieved. If any conflict occurs between any two sub departments or among employees, the General Manager of the construction department resolves the issues through confrontation between the conflicting parties. Decision making regarding target achievement and work scheduling is done by the General Manager of the department in consultation with the managers of the concerning departments. All decisions regarding determining the most suitable way to bring building materials to the site and other cost-effective plans regarding projects’ completion are taken by the construction managers of the company. After analysis and discussions, they come out with an appropriate decision in favor of the company. All employees including the General Manager are fully aware of their responsibilities and they have developed a professional approach towards accomplishment of all goals and objectives of the company. Hard work and commitment are the key steps towards promotion in the company. The most important work habit which the employees of Emaar have developed is commitment and dedication towards their jobs. Business communication between employees and business partners or colleagues takes place through faxes and electronic mails. And the communication between employees takes place through company’s service numbers. To sum it up, this training experience proved to be of great help for me as I learned the required skills which are needed for the post of manager. Mr. Steve McCartt helped me a great deal in telling the core responsibilities regarding my job. He introduced me to the existing employees of the company including managers of all sub departments, the database department, and the finance department. He also advised me about my future career.
