“For the democratic system to function in reality as it does, in theory, it is necessary that the judges, who are the key to any judicial system, be able to fulfill their role as guardians of legal and human rights” (Kelley, para.8). This means that becoming a judge needs one to meet certain pre-requisites. Only the selected ones become judges, and thus, they are highly educated, deserving decent salaries.
“THE PAY bill for the State’s 153 judges stood at €27.8 million last year, a fall of 1.7 percent in 2010 but an increase of 16 percent in 2008, the year in which the crisis in the public finances began” (O’Brien, para.1).
