Discussion Questions Discussion Questions Under what conditions does a job with a high motivating potential lead to high job-holder motivation? To high satisfaction? To frustration? According to Hackman and Oldman’s job characteristics model, the conditions that meet a job with a high motivating potential to lead to high job-holder motivation are conformity to five key characteristics: skills variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback (Ratzburg, n.d.). As such, individuals who possess ‘high growth needs’ were deemed to respond positively to the high motivating potential jobs and could lead to high satisfaction.

However, for those with high growth needs, absence of any of these characteristics could potentially lead to frustration.2. What are the potential pitfalls in job redesign? As emphasized by Shortell and Kaluzny (1997), the design of individual jobs must consider relevant factors that include analysis of the work itself, meeting individual needs, takes into consideration an appropriately designed framework in conjunction with other related jobs and those of the supervisor. Therefore, the potential pitfalls of job redesign include inability to carefully identify the requirements and interconnectedness of the elements of the work (Shortell & Kaluzny, 1997).3. Give examples of highly motivated people who do not contribute greatly to organizational outcomes?

Examples of highly motivated people who do not contribute significantly to organizational outcomes are freelance writers, for instance, who set separate personal and professional goals which are not congruent with the goals of the organization. Likewise, there could be health care professionals and practitioners who maintain private practice within a health care organization but sets distinct and separate professional goals from those of the organization.ReferencesRatzburg, W.
