? Interpersonal Management Skills Insert Insert Grade Insert 24th October Interpersonal Management Skills For any person living in an environment that has other people, s/he will need a great sense of self-awareness. This knowledge of oneself enables a person to know how to interact with other people. Populace in the world belong to different cultures and represent different values. Self-awareness enables a person to know their weaknesses and strengths. This enables a person to control his/her behaviour when interacting with others. Importance of interpersonal management in management course is that it teaches a person to relate with others by understanding them. Leaders are expected to understand personalities of the people they lead. Interpersonal intelligence helps a person to deal with their emotions. It enables people to appreciate what they feel. Once a person is able to understand what s/he is going through, s/he is able to make wise decisions. Such a person will in turn appreciate others who are living around him or her. With interpersonal intelligence, one can understand other people and properly respond to their feelings. Responding to others needs is achieved when one fully understands their emotions (Fabian, Not dated). Self management skills enable a person to be positive about other people. In such a case, a leader will take time to address concerns of other people. A good leader will take time to inspire workers through encouragement. This promotes confidence of other people and boosts their morale. People with a proper interpersonal intelligence will relate with others showing a lot of understanding and concern. Management skills like these are important because managers encounter many people who have different expectations. Interpersonal intelligence helps a person to get along with others well during interaction. Managers who undergo training in interpersonal management skills have a conduct that command respect from other people. They face situations with a lot of understanding. In respecting other people they are also respected. This course helps when it comes to leaders for they learn to relate well. When a person knows and understands his or her feelings, he is able to control their behaviours. This ensures that people are able to live without commotion while they are living together in an organization. Attributes of a person are shaped by intelligence of people if they are able to deal with each other and to control their emotions. Behaviours of people are modulated by their better understanding of their inner feelings. Personal intelligence is manifested in the implementation of thoughts a person has about a situation or a condition. Managers should learn intrapersonal and interpersonal management skills so that they can choose the words they can speak to specified people. These skills are effective because they determine the choice of thoughts to release as actions or words (Fabian, Not dated). Statements from emotional intelligence intrapersonal intelligence that can reflect my strengths are: first, I have emotional resilience; this means that I withstand pressure and stress if they befall me, I regain my strength and continue with life. I am in full control of my feelings. Second, I have personal power, and I am personally effective in control of my behaviour. Through this ability, I can choose what to do and when to do it. My behaviour is manageable because I have ability to avoid what I do not think worthwhile. The third statement of emotional intelligence intrapersonal intelligence I can say about myself is that I am flexible. This helps me to adapt to changes in the environment in which I live in. Sometimes these changes in the environment may not be predicted. This statement is a manifestation that I can respond to changes without struggling to make consultation. For example, at one time I am expected to perform roles as a mother of my children and at some other times I am supposed to behave as a wife to someone. These roles I manage because I am flexible. I appreciate that I have weaknesses that weigh me down even with those strengths I mentioned earlier. These cause me to be less effective in my day to day life. My weaknesses are manifested in the issue of goal directedness. One of my weaknesses is that I am unable to avoid distractions. Distractions may cause me to lose the focus of something I desired to accomplish. It is a great problem to me. I always try to avoid attentions that are not fostering my progress and sometimes in vain. The other manifestation of my weaknesses is indecisiveness. I am sometimes not able to sort the things that I like from things I do not like. This causes me to do a lot of things which might not be important to me. These two areas reflect aspects of my life that need improvement. There are ways in which I can move out of them. I can improve my skills in being directed and goal oriented by setting goals before I start any event. This will help me always be committed to what I am doing. Another way I have realised can improve my problem of distraction is avoiding potential causes of distractions. This will cause me to have a smoother terrain in attempt to achieve my goals than when I fight to avoid distraction that are already with me. One way I have realised can help me manage my situation of knowing what I like is choosing my likes from the start. Gauging the level of importance of anything in or anyone I meet will help me to overlook things that I did not choose from the start. When any confusion comes, it will be possible for me to solve it quickly without a lot of trouble. Another way to help me choose what I like and leaving what I do not like is by planning time. In this way, I will only slot time for things I think important at that particular time. With discipline of time management, it will be easy for me to avoid attending to issues that I did not plan for or meeting people I did not plan to meet. Some of the weaknesses I have are possible to alleviate. I do appreciate, however, that they are part of me, but think of something I can do about them. Meanings of words are not only tagged to the word themselves but to the way they are spoken. Meaning is related to culture because every culture has its own style of presenting information. There are words that are considered polite words in one culture but not in other culture. The important thing is how a person is able to convey information to the people in a way they will understand. Words’ meanings are associated with the society in which a person lives. For example, words are varied according to religion, culture, gender, and occupation of a person. For instance, my experience with men has shown me that their value system is different from women’s; therefore, the emphasis they give to some words is not totally similar to that of women. My interaction with people from other cultures has indicated how people communicate with others. For example, my interaction with non-Muslims has shown me that they have totally different value systems. These values determine the nature of interaction, words and stress they put on those words. I have realised that socialization has a lot of impact on word meanings. In my contacts with Africans and Arabs, I note many differences of their English language. What Africans mean by a word may vary with what an Arab will mean with the same word, and this is different with a person from Europe. For example, for Africans the word ‘indigenous’ represents things that are native to Africans. But to an Arab, it represents things that are natively Arabic. Categorising things will not be easy with these differences. As I have realised, all cultures have different value system that determine how they communicate; thus, I will be careful to understand their values first before I engage them. Understanding other people as different will enable me to choose words that are suitable to those people. In every circumstance, I will first acknowledge that we are not the same and that the other person is equally important. These will enable me to respect that person. When I show respect to another person, s/he will feel confident when speaking to me; hence, I will communicate with him or her. Understanding what people think valuable to them will ensure that I make them feel motivated to speak in my presence. To change my communication technique when I speak with people from different cultures, I will moderate my tone to match the tone of my listener. In doing so, I will be creating an environment that is conducive for them to express their views. Choice of words that presents an idea clearly will be another technique. Through this I will improve my communication with other people. This will mean I will target to do away with words that are not universally similar in meaning. Bibliography Fabian, J. Not dated.
