Moreover, we provide examples of best practices as they are implemented by manufacturing engineering companies in the present setting. Many authors have provided their own definition of best practices but current literature is consistent in its general notion that best practices are “those practices that have been shown to produce superior results” (Jarrar & Zairi, 2000, 4). Best practices refer to techniques, methods, processes, and disciplines that are “generally considered to be more effective at delivering a particular outcome than by other means” (ibid).

These practices are adopted by companies and organizations to ensure meeting standards for quality and safety, thus attaining business targets. Andrew (2003) points out that each best practice is perfected in every stage of a process. In the mechanical engineering field, in particular, best practices are initialized at the design stage. At this early stage of manufacturing, it is a best practice to “capture design and manufacturing knowledge early enough” (ibid, 57). The ability to capture relevant knowledge minimizes the time and cost of production and leads the company to achieve its targets.

To capture relevant knowledge at the early stage, it is a best practice to involve all stakeholders during planning. Stakeholders identify the needs and requirements of the market.
