An inquiry in to organization’s current practices and engagement level of employees can reveal the prevailing motivation levels among the employees. The objective of the research is to probe and evaluate the factors that motivate employees at HSBC. This includes both intrinsic and extrinsic factors assessed by considering company literature and an employee engagement survey. The key findings reveal that the motivation levels of employees prevailing at HSBC are equivalent or more than industry average.
However exploration of current practices reveals a gap between HSBC and other employers outside the banking industry. 2.0 Introduction In a management perspective, Motivation is described as a mechanism that starts, guides and sustains desired behaviors. These behaviors at work help organizations achieve their long terms and short term goals, in return the employee is rewarded with intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. Intrinsic rewards relate to the non-monetary rewards, these rewards appeal more to people who have internal locus of control while extrinsic rewards valuable in their own way appeal more to those who have external locus of control.
These rewards offered by the employer tend to focus on continuation of desired behavior of employees. Although modern research has proven that intrinsic rewards are valued more by employees than extrinsic ones. . Successful organizations believe in retaining their valuable human resources; HSBC is one of the largest banks in the world and the general perception about the bank amongst its stakeholders is positive. However the research report explores the factors that keep the employees of HSBC motivated and the strategies used for this purpose.
The research report involves extensive study in to the theoretical work presented by many theorists on the subject of motivation. Meanwhile the practices prevailing in the subject organization are studied by considering company literature and data gathered from employee engagement survey. 3.0 Research Question What are the different factors at HSBC that motivate employees at work? 4.0 Literature Review Motivation has many meanings, but in the context of modern business paradigm through many elements it strives to ensure that employees continue their efforts toward achievement of organizational goals.
In return they are rewarded in intrinsic or extrinsic ways that keep them working. In old days salary for employees was a sufficient factor, in many countries and organizations it is still the most motivating factor. Although with time other factors at work and in lives of individuals grew in importance and the inherent importance of salary was replaced by other motivating elements. If there is no motivation at workplace then quality and productivity of employees suffers. To avoid de-motivation at workplace, organizations tend to strategize motivational practices that keep the employees goal oriented and focused to their objectives.
