Most of the history told about the people of Rwanda focuses on how the formation of what is today the major ethnic groups in the country came about. From these report, one gets the understanding that the citizens used to live as independent clans people until the need to come together as one country became necessary. Prunier reported that there are archaeological excavations that give evidence to the effect that hunters had performed their activities in what is today Rwanda in as far back as the late stone age (3).

Into the early Iron Age, the population of settlers at the site increased as human activities focusing on hunting and farming continues. There were also those whose major trade focused on the production of pottery and iron tools (African Development Bank 78). According to Anyango, the need for leadership and much civility in the way the people lived led to the formation of social organizations, which became known as clans (3). These clans had their own heads, dating the concept of governance in Rwanda to the early Iron Age.

The most occupied portions with clans were the Great Lakes region of today’s Rwanda. With time, the populations increased and formation of alliances among the clans led to what is today’s ethnic groupings in the country. These are Hutus who have 84% of the current population, Tutsis who have 15%, and Two, with 1% (Anyango 93). Rwanda became ruled by Belgium after the World War II but held to its history in farming, hunting, and local craftsmanship. It gained independence on 1 July 1962.

The political and governance system currently in place in Rwanda has been in place since the referendum in 2003. This system has been described as an attempt to purging the country of most of the negative global image the country had as a result of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide (Dominique 9). Today, there is a democratic system of governance, which has the president of the country as the head of state. As the head of state, the president is responsible for creating policies, but in conjunction with his Cabinet (Adekunle 98).

There is a parliament, which leads the legislative arm of government, with the presidency, leading the executive arm.
