Graph Percentage of foreign born residents in China and MA A greater percentage of foreign born residents (62 live in China as compared to MA (15%). This means that 62% of residents in China were born in another country. Likewise, 15% of the residents in MA were born in another country. ‘Foreign-born’ refers to any individual born outside the borders of a particular country. The percentage is higher in China probably due to the large population of China. Graph 2: Percentage of foreign citizens in China and MA A greater percentage of the residents who are foreign nationals are found in MA than China.

59% of the residents in MA are citizens though they are migrants. 54% of the residents in China are citizens in the country though they are migrants. This could be probably due to more federal benefits enjoyed by being a citizen in MA than in China. Graph 3: The Median Age of Residents in China and MA The median age of foreign born residents in China is similar to the median age of foreign born residents in MA i.e. 43 and 42 respectively. However, foreign born migrants are older than the native born residents in China.

The median age of MA citizens is higher than the median age of residents from China. The median age of non-citizens is almost similar in China and MA with 39 and 36 years respectively. Generally, MA has a higher median age of the population due to increase in the proportion of adults as compared to China. Graph 4: Marriage rates of residents in MA Almost half of the population in MA is married (47%). However, there are more foreign born and non-citizens who are married as compared to the native born and citizens probably due to their existing culture and norms surrounding the notion of marriage.

Graph 5: Education attainment of residents in MA Most of the native born in MA have attained the highest form of education with about 77% having attained a BA or above. A greater percentage of non-citizens (26%) have less than a high school diploma. All in all, more than half of the population of citizens and non-citizens has attained the highest level of education with a BA or above. This is probably due to the fact that most migrants come into a particular country having attained a high level of education.

Graph 6: Labor force participation of residents in MA A higher percentage of foreign born have a higher labor force participation rate compared to the native born. This could be probably due to the major reason for migrating into the country which is to look for employment. The labor participation rate of citizens is the same as that of the general population i.e. 68%. Graph 7: Unemployment Rates of residents in MA A higher percentage of foreign born and non-citizens are unemployed. This could be probably due reasons such as lack of proficiency of the local language or difficulty in social integration into the country.

The unemployment rates of foreign born and non-citizens is within the level of unemployment of the general population. Graph 8: Residents employed in White collar, Service and Blue Collar occupations More than half of the population consisting of foreign born citizens and non-citizens has white collar jobs. An almost equal percentage of about 37% of this population is involved in the service industry. About 7% of this population has blue collar jobs. This trend suggests absence of discrimination in the employment market.

Graph 9: Hourly wages in White collar, Service or Blue collar occupations The population generally receives a high wage for white collar occupation. On average however, foreign born residents receive the highest wage rate for white collar jobs. The native born receive higher wages for blue collar jobs as compared to the foreign born but receive lower wages for services compared to foreign born residents. The foreign born could be receiving higher wage rates for white collar jobs probably because they are expatriates and are highly specialized in the particular skill (Blaschke, 2004).

The wages for service and blue collar jobs are within the wage levels of the population in MA. Graph 10: Medical Uninsurance rates of residents in MA A greater percentage of foreign born residents and non-citizens lack medical insurance. This suggests that medical insurance cover depends on origin of the resident and their citizenship (Wasem, 2008). It suggests that medical insurance is one of the federal benefits of being a citizen of MA. WORKS CITED Blaschke, Jochen. Employment strategies for immigrants in the European Union.
