Article response Asian Americans have been labeled as model minority in the US. This article discusses whether Asian Americans are still seen as model minority in the US, what are Asian Americans’ feelings about this label, to what extent is this label accurate, and what the academic and social implications of this are of labeling. Asian Americans are still seen as a model minority by the Americans in all areas of life in general and in academia in particular. Many Asian Americans do not like being labeled as the model minority because of the expectations that come with being labeled.

Asian American is a very broad classification and people identified as Asian Americans belong to different Asian countries often with contrasting cultures. It is understandable, thus, why Asian Americans might not behave as what is expected of them by the non-Asian Americans in the US. Failure to behave as expected from the members of this label ‘model minority’ lends a sense of insecurity and failure to some Asian Americans. They struggle with the identity issues as they cannot figure out whether they are more Asian or American.

It is already hard for immigrants to overcome the culture shock in the host country. Things only become more difficult when they realize that the native people have a set of expectations from them since they are identified with a certain label. I found this as a very interesting and thought-provoking article. Before reading it, I thought a positive label only has positive effects on its members, but now, I have realized the different ways in which even positive labels are more of a bane than a blessing.
