Susan Faludi’s Facebook Feminism; Rethinking Lean In In Lean In, Cheryl Sandberg emphasizes on personal empowerment and reiterates that personal skills help people to make their way at work. Susan Faludi’s Facebook Feminism, Like It or not argues against Lean In by raising concerns and questions that change leaders need to consider carefully. Faludi argues that Sandberg’s approach of personal empowerment does not effectively address the limits of the structure that hold back women working at low pay levels of a corporation.

Faludi suggests that a woman who does not earn promotion at Wal-Mart would probably not get a raise in her Lean In skills.Faludi criticizes Sandberg’s work by saying that, “what has been missed is a real opportunity that Sandberg’s proposal unintentionally spotlights: the opportunity to talk honestly about class and feminism.” The many statistics that Sandberg cites do not talk about the struggles of working women below her level. Faludi reiterates that class distinctions are an outgrowth of male domination.

She criticizes most feminist movements work for not talking about class. She specifically challenges Lean In by stating that, “Sandberg’s book mentions single mothers in passing. But what if she were to champion them? What if the Lean In community or any group of feminist movement were to organize around the cause of single motherhood instead of the cause of their own self-congratulation?”By adapting a social structural perspective, Faludi talks about how corporations methodically act to protect the powers of those in control and can decisively restrict the power of women in in lower-wage jobs.

She cites lack of women in management of high-tech firms such as Facebook as evidence of informal cultures of inequity. Faludi’s carefully structures her work not to look like an attack on Sandberg’s Lean in successfully raising uncomfortable questions and puts a public issue to account.Work CitedFaludi, Susan.
