The Desired Conclusion of the Book
The book ends with Sohrab and Amir both flying kites, with Amir recalling his episodes with Hassan, the Kite runner. Sohrab still smiled, as always did his father Hassan. However, this was not the way the story should have ended. What happened to Sohrab and his life? Did he marry an American blonde lady or went back to Afghanistan to marry their own. The conclusion of the book should have been somewhat different from what exactly the conclusion encompasses currently in the published copy of the book.
The story should have continued: The cheering crowd went on vehemently, as if they were not ready to stop the shouting anytime soon. This geared up Sohrab’s pace as he ran past the rest with his kite flying the highest. It brought vivid memories back, as if Sohrab was the rightful imitation of Hassan, his father. This triggered more thoughts through Amir’s mind, of how life can be short and unfair, of how his friend Hassan had lost almost everything but his son. It was a crystal clear as the summer sky in Afghanistan that indeed, Hassan was being replaced by his own son his repute was being replenished through his son’s deeds. Hassan was determined to impress and meet the expectation of other people. In those days, the crowd’s cheer would represent Hassan’s desire to impress and attain his desires. Amir thought of this and could see his old friend in Sohrab. It was only a memory that took him back to his younger age but only for a moment. His face was filled with sorrow and delight as he truly missed Hassan.
After about ten years of living in the different states of the America, Sohrab finally got a job as an attorney in a reputable law firm in California, after he graduated with his first class honors degree at the University of California. It was so ironical, how a young boy from Afghanistan, who could not read or write, let alone converse well in the Queen’s language, had turned to be a charming young lawyer in the United States. More like a kite runner, he placed his strength in education and was determine to finish in the front line. As Hassan would have done had he the financial support needed to run the race as the layman would call education. Soraya played an integral part in the success of Sohrab. She turned out to be more supportive of the boy compared to Amir, maybe because of her cravings and desires to raise a child of her own, a chance the laws of nature had denied her. Amir vividly remembered the day Soraya was to receive her news from a medical report, which was to determine her fate of whether she would get a child of her own. The doctor called late in the evening, around 5.30pm. “Can I speak to Soraya please?” the doctor spoke through the phone with a sound almost to be a whisper. At this stage, the couple was unsure what exactly was happening to them, they had tried to get medical assistance to no avail. Still no child came. Finally the doctor broke the news to Soraya, “I am sorry ma’am, but you’d better start arranging for adoption if you really need a child to grow”. Soraya sunk to the floor and wept for hours, refusing to listen to any consolations from her husband. Amir sat helplessly at the couch, his thoughts in oblivion.
Sohrab finally met his soul-mate during a vacation in Las Vegas, an American blonde who had brown, curly hair, fresh from her nursing undergraduate course. She currently was doing her internship in pharmacy where Sohrab often went to get his fatigue pills. It was no wonder Sohrab went across the street, leaving other pharmacies and going to this specific one. Her name was Whitney. It took over three months before Sohrab gathered the courage to ask her out. For some reason, she did not hesitate. This was the beginning of a love story, which ended with Sohrab siring two handsome sons, whom though foreseeable, ran their kites high too during their gaming competitions in school. “The kite runner is no longer owned by Hassan, it has spread to his lineage and is not somewhat hereditary” , Amir, who was now old and losing his eyesight, whispered to Sohrab as they watched the kids race with kites that sunny summer morning. Greatness was following Hassan’s family, thanks be to Allah.
Explain why you chose this book:
The Kite Runner is a book that creates euphoria in any enthusiastic reader. Brief Summary (without giving away the climax or resolution):
The book starts with the creation of what came to be a long-term relationship between Amir and Hassan. Hassan was known to be the kite runner, as he loved the site of kites flying high and dancing in the air over the windmills in Pakistan. Rahim Khan was a friend to Amir, not that they were age mates, as Rahim was in fact, Amir’s father’s friend. From his childhood, however, Amir had grown fond of Rahim Khan and had literary grown affection for him. This may have been because unlike Amir’s father, Rahim had always supported Amir. In his early ages, Amir’s father had thought of him as lacking a fundamental part within his life, because he did not love sports, could not defend himself from physical harassment and that all he did was jot down poems.
The story develops as Amir and Hassan turn out to be best of friends and later consider each other half brothers. They always had each other’s back regardless of the fact that Amir was literate and went to school, while Hassan remain home as his father, Ali could not afford the expensive and ‘luxurious’ life of educating his son. Ali had worked for Amir’s father most of his life as a servant and had been hit by Polio disease making him permanently lame. Although Amir’s father tried to treat Ali as a brother, there religious boundaries and origins always fought the fact they had a bond of brotherhood.
The book ends with Amir coming back to Afghanistan to look for Hassan’s son, Sohrab. He finds Sohrab orphaned as his parents had been murdered in the streets. An attempt to rescue and adopt the young lad and take him to America meets great hurdles, from regulations to laws. Amidst the struggle to acquire a visa for Sohrab, Hassan’s son, he tries to commit suicide in the hotel bath tab. Amir, however, rescues him and manages to move him to America under humanitarian laws, where his barren wife Soraya meet them at the airport. The book concludes in a manner so unexpected, as Amir leads a group of children to fly a kite, remembering his friend Hassan.
