Poem review is the critical analysis of a poem to determine the meaning of it. Poem reviews involve searching for the controlling metaphor in the poem. In addition to, searching for a controlling metaphor aims at comparing the literal and figurative meaning of the poem. The Literal meaning of the poem is the direct meaning of the poem. Poet review requires the individuals to discuss every detail in the poem. Poetry needs critical analysis because it is subject to imaginations. Poem analysis is done in order to have a better understanding of its meaning. The poem may have a hidden theme and analysis helps in interpreting the message. Each and every word in a poem have a poem (Zhang & Jonathan, 12).
Zhang Ji was a major poet who existed in the dynasty of Tang. He wrote over 300 poems during his time, indicating his efforts. Zhang Ji was a talented individual who had a wide range of styles to choose from. There were many events that took place in the era of Zhang Ji; this prompted him to express his feelings through poems. There is little information on the life of Zhang Ji as a successful individual. He used Chinese nature to describe some things in the society.
Night mooring is a poem written by Zhang Ji during the Tangy dynasty. The Tang dynasty is a traditional Chinese era. Zhang Ji writes the poem in moments of consciousness to speak his mind. There are words in the poem that are mean to read aloud to get the hidden meaning. Simplicity of expression was widely used by the author in his poems. Economy of words is one the main features in the poem (Zhang & Jonathan, 16). The technique is used to help individuals easily memorize the poem. The language used in the poem helps students memorize the poem, despite having been written in the past. Poems written in the Tang Dynasty are referred to as Tang poems. The narratives of the poem are straightforward and clearly describes things.
The poet writes the poem having been woke up fro troubled sleep. Analysis shows that he is on a boat in the city of Suzhou. The boat is moored in the city through a bridge called Maple. The bridge is in existence today because of the work of Zhang Ji. It is currently a famous bridge that attracts many tourists. The scenes described in the poem exist and are visible to individuals. The poem is described as a seven character in four lines and read from left to right. Furthermore, the poem is read from top to bottom and the fifth lines show the name of the poem. There are real hidden meanings behind the words of the poem. The poem needs to be read more than once to uncover the meaning of the poem. The poet stresses that individuals are always homesick and sad when visiting new places. It is seen that when the boat arrives in Suzhou the traveler is home sick and sleepless. The traveler is at Maple Bridge at the section his boat moored. The night is cold and the cry of crow filled the place. The sound of the temple bell and the light from the fisherman filled the atmosphere of the city (Zhang & Jonathan, 22)..
The first lines of the poems show the hidden and direct meaning of the poem. Analysts stress that the structure of the poem plays an important role in conveying meaning. Translation of the poem from Chinese to English has affected the true meaning of the poem. It is no longer considered as a Chinese poem, but as an Engish as well. There is flow of English and it is structure helps convey the meaning of the poem. The structure of the poem gives the poem a unique pattern. There are many poems written in the same manner as Night Mooring at Maple bridge. Poems written in seven word structure are easy to understand and analyze.
Essential words in the poem are not rigid and easy to analyze. The technique is useful in the creation of the lengths. Essential words are used to create lines used to form couplets that are important in the length of poems (Pound, 13).
. Essential words have helped translators to translate the poems from Chinese language successfully. Essential words help the meaning to maintain sense as the original poems. The author wrote the poem in ancient Chinese which requires critical analysis. Different cultures speak different languages and there has to be a common language (Kennedy, 14). The common language helps in translation form one language to another. There are challenges of translating from one language to another.
Translation of the poem has made the poem an English poem translated using Chinese techniques. The poem no longer shows the emotions of the poet. There are many factors that lead to the failure of translation from ancient Chinese to English. Lack of understanding of the source leads to failure of translation. The translator may not understand the message the poet is trying to say. It leads to distorted information that misleads the readers of the poem. The important factor in translation is to convey the emotions of the poet (Kennedy, 19). The use of literature, methodologies help translation of essential information from one language to another. Linguistics methods increase the ability of accurate translation. There is a chance that the stylistic features will have an impact on the original poem.
Analysis of Chinese poetry indicates that the language has very words that rhyme in the end. The tone brought by the English language is incompatible with the traditional Chinese language. In the poem, the writer is homesick because he travelled to the Maple Bridge. The writer travelled away from home and the one, the tone of the Chinese helped in portraying melancholy. Translation of the song in English failed to reproduce the atmosphere brought by the Chinese language (Gohrab, 25). In the second line there was a problem in the translation because the translator did not integrate scene and play. The original statement in the poem is changed to meet the standards of the English language.
There are many individuals who view the translation with different criteria. The translator focusses on maintaining the meaning of the poem. The poem has variation in the tones created by a phonetic system of the poem. In Chinese, the basic unit is a syllable that composes the tone of the statement. There are factors that lead to the difficulties of the Chinese language that sentences need to have a connection. Chinese is learnt by individuals in the American culture as part of their curriculum. It has become a language in most undergraduate programs in the country. Most of the students do not have the skills to translate the languages in their original form. There is an approach, in the Tang dynasty illustrated the importance of having poetic creations.
Matching of poems and paintings is widely practiced in the China. It involves teaching Chinese to school children with the aim that they will be able to match paintings with poems. Students in American culture do not have the needed skill to interpret paintings and the poems. The poem has imagery aimed at showing the emotions of the writer. The images bring the reader closer to what the writer is trying to achieve. Individuals come from different cultures, which make have different perceptions. The use of imagery enables the reader to view the point of the poet clearly (Gohrab, 25). Use of inanimate objects like trees strongly shows the intentions of the poet.
In conclusion, linguistic features in Chinese poetry make it different from poems written in English. Poetry is appreciated by many individuals in various cultures and languages. The readers appreciate translated poems that aim to maintain their meaning. The readers of a poem will want to read authentic materials to make their own conclusions. Meaning of poems are maintained when there are plenty of linguistic distinctions.
