Extract of sample "Characters in Soldier's Home by Ernest Hemingway"

The characters in "Soldier's Home" by Ernest Hemingway are the most memorable to me. Their struggles seemed so real and believable, and they were written in a modern style that was easy to read and relate to. It was also a very depressing situation that resonated with me given how we treat people who are in the military today.William Wordsworth defined poetry as . the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings which.. takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility." I would define poetry as being a way of using words and language to describe an experience on more than one level at the same time.

So in this definition, even just a sentence someone says can be poetry if it gets you to look below the surface of reality and think about how things really are. A lot of the time this means rhyme or other tricks, but I think it is possible to write poetry that does not need any of that. Even a lot of song lyrics meet this definition of poetry.
