He introduces a trivial and nonsense issue with complete irrelevance amidst a serious topic of discussion.

He chooses to talk about sandwiches while the intelligent conversation is taking place and remarks he is talking about science of life. The rich has posh life, and all they cannot do is enjoy town life while talking matters of triviality. In both of the Oscars work, the members of the upper-class brand themselves as important that everyone else simply because they have titles. In order to bring out the social criticism, Oscar introduces these members of the upper class as lords and ladies (Bristow pp. 12). In addition, Oscar continues brings out triviality; both Algernon and Jack have created false character.

Algernon has invented an invaluable lasting invalid character called Bunberry, and Jack has invented an important brother called Ernest. According to
