Jig is a person who quite often experiences mood swings and she happens to be motivated by her own thoughts due to this she ends up in confrontations with her boyfriend throughout the story. For example: before communicating with her boyfriend in a bar she seems to be quite happy but experiences frustration immediately as her boyfriend denies her belief that they can have everything they wish for.
Jig seems to be quite naïve of a person and quite foolish as she happens to believe in what she is being told by her boyfriend and fails to take decisions on her own. For example, her boyfriend is of the idea that aborting the child will make them happy and she continues to hold on to that belief. In reality, all the American want is for her to abort her child so he can continue to be with her without the burden of the child. Her own instincts keep on conflicting with the views of the Americans as she continuously keeps asking her boyfriend whether he will love her after she gets the child aborted and whether they will be happy after the abortion.
She seems to be a person who cares less about herself and is quite carefree as she continues to drink heavily even when she is pregnant with a child. She is a person who gives precedence to her boyfriend’s wishes, rather than her own interests as she is having the child aborted only to see her boyfriend happy. Another important aspect of Jig is that she does not portray the image of current feminists that is promoted by the feminist movement. Today’s famines are expected to be stronger and have the ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with the male gender, but Jig is completely opposite and is portrayed as subordinate to the male gender.
She appears to be in a state of confused thoughts and feels quite helpless. This can be seen as she continuously holds on to the belief that her boyfriend will be there for her once she gets the abortion process completed. One thing is for sure she knows that their relationship has been badly damaged and will never return to the state that they were experiencing before Jig got pregnant.
