Internal Structure in “Sonrisas” by Pat Mora The poem was organized into two distinctly different stanzas. Each stanza has a similar structure, but describes two different groups of people. This represents the internal structure of the poem, as the poet draws the reader to understand two different cultures. The poet uses the first stanza to talk about a woman who is uptight, smiles rarely and always about curriculum, tenure and budgets. The second stanza represents a different woman that is all smiles, laughs and talks loudly.

My opinion is that Pat was trying to express their point of view of two different worlds, which we often experience in the society. This understanding was arrived at after analyzing the manner in which the poet describes two different events in the stanzas. The poet’s description of the different events is apparent, for Pat uses the differences of the two groups of women to make comparison of their worlds. For example, the uptight women in stanza one, are drinking black coffee, in a very serious and sombre mood, while those in stanza two are drinking coffee with light milk (Mora 10).

The first group is in crisp beige suits while those in the second group are in swirls in faded dresses. The structured differences described in the poem makes it easy to understand the underlying theme of the poem. The reader is cast in a doorway between two different rooms, with two different groups representing two diverse worlds. This is depicted through the differences of the eyes of the women, a strategy the poet has effectively put to effect. In the poem, the doorway or observation of the reader is seen through the eyes of the women, as the first had void eyes, while the second had dark and mesmerizing eyes.

Organized in this manner, it is easy for a reader to understand the meaning of the poem. Work cited Mora, Pat. “Sonrisas.” In, Introduction to Literature. Ed. Barnet, Sylvan, Burto, William E. And Morton, Cain. London: Longman Publishers. 10-11. 2005. Print.
