Interpersonal Communications in Super Sad True Love Story of Learning Introduction Interpersonal communication is a vital aspect of expressing one’s ideas to the people around, and enhances the societal interaction. In fact, it is through interpersonal communication that one improves what scholars refer to as functional literacy among the people. For this paper, the focus is to evaluate the story Super Sad True Love Story by Shteyngart, published in 2010, in relation to aspects such as Symbolic Interactionism, Social Construction of Language and Sapir-Whore Hypothesis (Shteyngart, 2010). In addition, the concepts are to be discussed and applied to the field of interpersonal communication as each relates to the construction of the futuristic society in Super Sad True Love Story. This is intended to summarize the importance of interpersonal communication within the contemporary social context. Symbolic Interactionism Currently, the social media plays an important role of horrific persuasion, thus acting as a symbolic interactionism due to the application of technology in developing interpersonal relationship and communication. Notably, the majority of World population is armed with the so called apparatus, which are the devices that are able to provide a variety of services within their reach. Issues such as online shopping, social networking among many others have formed the basis of interpersonal communication. Turning to the Super Sad True Love Story, it is utterly ridiculous, funny but perhaps real. The author depicted that the current world is characterized by profound literacy that is seen as a commonplace for many people (Shteyngart, 2010). Another symbolic interactionism that the author used in his work is the Lenny Hawks’ immorality. According to the author, his fixating argument that one is able to attain immorality is a way of making one avoid such actions (Shteyngart, 2010). Ironically, Lenny lives in a community where the people did not regard the old age. The author portrays the community to be formed immediately the rapture had been completed, thus making it sound ridiculous. Here, the sad holocaust as portrayed in this story was the relocation of many of people who were living in the community. Notably, Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) was a symbolic meaning of the new ways of interpersonal communication that the current society has to adopt (Shteyngart, 2010). Shteyngart’s story ended in a morose way, where the art of communication accepted a multi-dimensional and multi-functional system, in which the expression took an unprecedented form. Therefore, it means that with increased technological development, dissemination of information has become very easy and convenience, thereby making the people interact more often than before. Notably, Nettie Fine’s death is symbolically attributed to the end of illiteracy age and the emergence of information era with literate people who are able to communicate and interact freely (Shteyngart, 2010). After an elongated period of searching the meaning of immortality, it eventually fell on Nettie and Lenny, who had to accept the change surrounding reality. Here, by referring to death as being inevitable, the author was rather symbolic and was actually referring to the end of illiteracy (Shteyngart, 2010). The scenario where the people lacked adequate information was replaced with the age when the people were knowledgeable, used the latest information to communicate and interact with the people around them. The logic is that the use of information has open avenues for social networking, turning the whole world to a global village. Social Construction of Language Concerning the social construction of language, the author took issues with IM-speak and misspelling, which he described as societal norms (Shteyngart, 2010). In essence, each group of people has a way of speaking, perhaps the best way to identify the variety. Since the people speak in a specific manner, those who share common ethnic language mostly have similar accent, which differs significantly from the other categories. On the story, the author refers to the commonly notable sic(s) as forms of illiteracy that the people affected should consider altering (Shteyngart, 2010). He argued that this aspect is compounded by the fact that many people skim through the books instead of reading them carefully. In addition, he postulated that language development is affected by the reality where walls of books, full of lyrics and proper grammar, lie idle on the shelves (Shteyngart, 2010). Importantly, the author’s improbable girlfriend is not an exception as she too, avoids books. She claims that the disgusting smell of the books that the readers might inhale and their musty pages makes it horrible for one to be persistence in reading; thereby they resort to other forms of interpersonal communication, especially using the latest technological innovation. Sapir-Whore Hypothesis Hypothetically, Lenny was depicted as a lovable, but fatally oblivious, delusional and perhaps cannot perceive the truth relating to love (Shteyngart, 2010). This statement indicates that the person is somewhat blind of what he is expected to do, and does not seem to have the right information on the way forward. However, this is merely a masterful assumption since the entries of his diary have some wanting pictures, which depicts interpersonal ties and the formulas eventually worked for him. It is no doubt that the author is a satirist as evidenced by his opinion regarding politics, a hilarious attitude indeed (Shteyngart, 2010). Within this political thought, the Bipartisan formed the government, a scenario that the author termed as a theoretical or probable idea which result was disastrous, thus a super sad story. Looking at the evidence presented in the story, to some extent, it presents a funny and sad occurrence. Indeed, the author focused on where the people were heading to, without feeling upset on the past events, in relation to interpersonal relationships and communication (Shteyngart, 2010). The author realized the economic development is dependent on both theoretical and practical technological innovation that promotes social integration relations and communication among the people. Shteyngart makes his story to sound heroic and relied on the truth to depict the non-sexy love story filled with high determination of achieving the best on issues related to interpersonal communication. Noting that it has contributed a lot in enhancing relationships, the story tells about the transition from the era of illiteracy to the era of information literacy (Shteyngart, 2010). From this information, one understands that as the people adopt technological changes, the status quo can never be the same. Hypothetically, the people would eventually witness great change in terms of efficiency and effectiveness of their communication and interpersonal relations as evidenced in the story. Conclusion In summary, the story indicated the power and influence of interpersonal communication in enhancing relationships among the people regardless of age, gender and other personal attributes. In fact, the Super Sad True Love Story is really and utterly ridiculous, funny, sad, but perhaps real love story. The author brought a clear picture of transition with relation to literacy of the people, indicating that the current world is characterized by profound literacy that is seen as a commonplace for many people. On matters relating to the social construction of language, the author identified and explained matters relating to IM-speak and misspelling, which he described as societal norms and their impacts on the people affected. As far as communication is concerned, each group of people has a way of expression, perhaps that would be the best way to identify the varieties of changes the society. Finally, the author focused on where the society was heading to in terms of technological innovation, other than feeling upset on the past events, on issues relating to interpersonal relationships and communication.
