His family and his customers are very sympathetic to him, as were the police; however, for him the event was devastating, causing him to question himself repeatedly. He shall have to live with it forever. The Red Convertible by Louise Erdrich is about two Chippewa brothers, Henry and Lyman Lamartine. Narrated by Lyman, it describes the bond the two brothers share. Lyman tells the story of how he and his brother acquired a red convertible together and went on road trips together on it before Henry was drafted into the US army.

He was sent to Vietnam and was a changed man upon his return. Lyman does his best to cheer Henry up and to keep him occupied, even busting up the red convertible for Henry to work on. However, once the car is fixed, the brothers take another road trip together, when Henry jumps into a river to his death.
