Arm Wrestling with my Father by Brad Manning - Book Report/Review Example

The explains the relationship the father and the son have. The relationship is strained, they are not compatible, since the son refers to the father as the 'arm', the master with clenched fists. The writer lists a number of names used that the son would refer to the father as; Daddy, Dr, Moreland. The only way they would talk to each other is referring to each other as an arm. It is through the style of description that the reader learns about the themes and character traits of the father and the son. The author is able to unfold the events in the book. Plot The writer uses a plot to give summary of the book. The reader will be able to have an overview of the book. In the book, the writer will be able to read the introductory part of the story, expository, climax and denouncement or conclusion to have the knowledge of the story.

Use of stylistic devices The writer is artistic by nature. Therefore he or she must make sure that his piece of writing is interesting therefore he has to include all the stylistic devices relevant to the kind of materials that he is writing. In most cases, the stylistic devices can be similes, imagery, use of standard language and others. Examples from the essay Comparing Brad Manning's story "Arm Wrestling with my Father" and "Itabari Njeri's "When Morpheus Held Him", the son refers to his father as an arm.

Themes In the essay, the author should have a subject matter he has targeted. To come up with themes for instance "Reparations" for slavery and "Fatherhood". The subject in their writing indicates the relationship that exists between a father and a son. According to the reader, could this be his or her expectation should be that the two should be related in a friendly way but their crude way of relationship surprises the reader and he or she might want to know what would have conspired, for it to come to that level.

Persuasion/ Argument The author would argue according to his feelings. He may want to pursue the writer to his side. So that for instance, according to Brad Manning's story "Arm Wrestling with my Father", the author is targeting the reader to his opinion that the son is the one on the wrong. It is him who keeps on referring to his father as "An arm" but the father is innocent. That is why writing is a work of art whereby an author can shape it the way he or she wants.

Examples The author has used examples in the essay. In the example, the teacher gives an example of vehicles he used to go with to school sometimes a bus and other times a car. The break from a continuous flow of the story enables the reader to have a concrete conviction about a particular idea.
