Les Miserables Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables (1862) is the great prose epic of the nineteenth century. Though the ethics in any given society provides that people should be punished and corrected depending with the magnitude of their mistakes, it does not sound realistic when Valjean is sentenced for five years just because he breaks a window and steals a piece of bread. His attempts to escape from the Toulon prison earn him the title “dangerous”. The authorities extend his life in prison to 19 years. Valjean’s heart winning virtue is love, which is the interesting part of the controversial treatment he gets. Valjean asks, “What is the loving thing to do...what is the right or the legal thing to do?” and as a result, ethical dilemmas are much simpler for him. It is important to note that loving for him is the most difficult issue because he risks breaking rules to make it happen. According to the deeds, Bishop Myriel is not a typical bishop or even a conventional Christian. He operates on his own innate sense of morality. His type of morality is not a provision under any Christian doctrine.
