The fate of man changed into a nature of uncertainty. While it was Satan who caused the deviance, man is justifiably and inevitably coursed to take on his new fate; and this new fate becomes a responsibility of choosing between good and evil as a result of a new emerging free will.
In creating man, God gave him free will; but, on the other hand, man is free to fall. Man is entitled to punishment for his sins which are attached to his free fall. This then poses a question on God’s merciful intentions: if a man is not responsible for the fall as it was based on free will, how can he be subject to punishment? However, if God inclines the will of man to moral good or evil according to his pleasures, and then rewards the good and punishes the evil disparity is also caused. It is then from this supposition that divine justice is founded. Milton emphasizes what Genesis describes as a sinful fate and nature of man as well as the consequences that this development brings: “Farewell happy Fields Where Joy for ever dwells: Hail horrors, hail infernal world” (9). In the preceding line, Milton shortly chronicles the partial end of “absolute” happiness of mankind. In the Bible, the Garden of Eden, or the Paradise, is being described as a place of ultimate joy and happiness: no pain, no sorrow, no hardship, etc; nevertheless, after the sin has been committed, everything turned nearly up-side-down. This only shows how sin caused human miseries from the time of Adam and Eve until today.
This principle then allows God to express his mercy to mankind and also allows man to make an independent choice in obeying and loving God so that he can finally end up in a better place. It is true that if the man had not fallen then there would be no need of Christ the Savior. This also means that there would be no redemption which is God’s plan of restoring man. The process of redemption of man began when Christ died for man. Even though man will have to suffer consequences, he will have God’s grace and mercy.
