My speech focuses on the topic gender equality, a very contentious area of discussion in the larger gender subject. Gender does not necessarily mean male or female like it is normally assumed to be by different people but it is comprehensive so that it covers a range of mental, physical as well as behavioral characteristics that differentiates between masculinity and femininity. In order to understand these differences, we need to consider the difference social roles of the varied gender groups.
The topic on gender is one that has been discussed in hundreds of conferences worldwide and this is so because of the contentious nature of the same. Any time the word gender is heard, the perception is always greatly diversified and some of the things that ring into people’s minds are either gender equality, gender based violence, definition of gender, just to mention but a few. The diversity in perception of gender issues prompted me to speak to you today on one of the gender topics that has been the center of discussion in different conferences, both local national and international and that is gender equality.
The gender equality issue goes around the oppression of either men or women or boys or girls and looking at it, the rights of the two opposite sides must be taken into consideration. Gender equality is when the rights of the different sexes i.e. male and female or different groups of individuals are not infringed into and thus there is no bias in terms of the considerations while gender inequality arises when there is bias in terms of the appreciation of different gender. This could be in terms of allocation of resources, observation of the different rights of the gender groups.
This means that there are reasons or factors that lead to such an inequality and at this juncture ladies and gentlemen I want to invite you to think of the roles of different gender groups because this is the cause of either equality or inequality in gender and indeed this culminates into the conflicts involving the different groups. Just as an example, in a family set up, there are roles of the parents and those of children, at the same time; a father has different roles to the mother. Despite the distinction in roles, there are some similarities in roles in cases where the roles are general.
During ancient times before the modern civilization, roles were distinct between different gender groups for example, the place of the woman was the kitchen while the man was to go out and find for the family. With the advent of industrialization and modernization, the woman no longer stays at home but has a place in the job market and so the roles are no longer distinct. The woman has proved with time to be able to fit in areas that traditionally a preserve of the man and this has prompted the need to accept equality in some areas of life for example in the economic occupations.
With such developments therefore, gender equality is thus a very crucial topic and adjustment of our mindset is critical in preparation to handle the same and an equally leveled point of reasoning is also important. Gender equality and especially women advancement remains one of the most critical development in most parts of the world. What gives this development the criticality mentioned above is simply the forces of opposition that are always present during the
