?Short Story Analysis Introduction The short story “Eveline by James Joyce is an interesting one, as it is filled with emotions, joy sorrow, romance and desperation. This story is an eye catcher as it definitely conveys the message of love, morals, duty and family values to people around the world. In this short story, the author has attempted full heartedly to disclose the importance of parents and the unconditional love a child nurtures for them. The story here revolves around a teenage girl “Eveline” who is ardently in love with a man called James and it further explains about her dilemma in choosing love or family .According to (Joyce) “ She had consented to go away, to leave her home. Was that wise ?She tried to weigh each side of the question”This definitely shows her maturity and dedication to the family.This story defines in detail the complexities of life and the real truth of life. The story and its characters are reflecting the real life situations of a family and any common man could see their life moments in it. The Story let the readers understand the value of parents and how a girl of idealistic character and beautiful heart would care take her family. In general , any short story would convey some message to readers at times this can be it less strong and at times it can be extremely heart touching. James Joyce as a writer, in this short story has given enriched message to readers about the high thinking of a fragile and sensitive girl Eveline.This story also would pass message to girls who are selfish and provocative and desert parents in look out for pleasure and happiness. A further analysis of the story would give out more in-depth information about the perspective of the readers and realities of life. Theme of the story Any short story is built on a theme and same goes with “Eveline”by Joyce .This story has the theme of sacrifice and it is deeply portrayed in the story from the entire angle. The story highly concentrates on the sacrificing quality of the central female character of the story that is “Eveline”. Sacrifice is an evident and necessary element in life and only this quality can give love and affection to the people in the family. Without this, life is less meaningful and turn out be a selfish process. The story vividly expresses the concern a young girl for her father who is less considerate and loving to her in the childhood years. She is shining brightly in the story and the writer has projected in the story the strongest quality of a female. The central character Eveline’s sacrificial nature is depicted, when she think of taking care of her father while discarding her love of life. As per (Joyce)“ She showed set white face to him, passive , like a helpless animal. Her eyes gave him no signs of love, farewell or recognition.” This is a rare attribute found in people and as the author chose this quality of humankind, the story got more ethical value. The story also showcases the sacrificing quality of the mother of Eveline , which is indirectly reflecting from her. The story tells the world that love is the most valuable element inhuman life and without sacrifice, love cannot be spread. In the short story “Eve line” the young woman called Eveline put her feelings and romance in back front for the goodness and wellbeing of her family and loved ones. Purpose of the story Every story has a purpose when it is written and this story being a family oriented one, has the intention of imparting human values and morality to readers. A story is always purposeful as an author consistently desire to deliver message throughout the story. Here the aim of the writer is to make people believe that being selfish can only hurt people and to love people one need to think more than about one. Here the story has to tell people that even if love is not gotten, one has the duty to give affection and love to parents, Here, parents are given importance because when readers understand this story they would definitely absorb this message instantly. Even though sacrifice is embedded in the story, the author wants the readers to think on love and affection which is deeply rooted in that quality .The story has the evident purpose of communicating to the reader that love is unconditional and it can be given even if not received from the other person. Here the young woman is attempting to follow the footsteps of her mom and intending to take care of her family forgetting her future. The author here, let out to the world about the conflicting nature of people in a family and how they can turn out to be mean and selfish at different points of time. The real purpose of the story is to bring about feeling of love, caring and dedication to parents which are not very common in today’s world. Interpretation of the story The story “Eveline “gives us an exclusive opportunity of thinking about ourselves and the way we will respond to a circumstance in life which is crucial and significant. In every family, people are of different nature and the way they interact and react with people differs greatly. Human beings have a unique tendency to be selfish and be negligible of other s and this attribute is reflected in this story through the central character “Eve line” and other supporting characters. However, the two female characters in the story, who are Eve line and her mother is depicted as personalities who are loving, dedicated and caring and is symbolized as ideal family members. The feminine value is celebrated in the story and the author has made women the foundation of a successful family. The story intimidates a woman to think deeply about her feminine attributes and compare it with “Eveline”.She having portrayed as an ideal woman seems to be slightly influenced by her mother and this is a message to all women to accept good qualities from their maternal side in order to bring about happiness and prosperity to the family and whole world. The story here also throws light upon the helplessness and desperation of a young woman who is bonded to her family. Here, we can see that the story projects the twists and turns of life and how different people face it boldly and sensibly. The interpretation of the story gives meaning to life and glance deep into the human instincts and values. Conclusion The short story “Eve line” is written from the perspective of women and is deliberately dedicated to women all around the world. The story has a strong message and is strongly standing out and this makes the author more strong and successful as a writer. Here eve line is eager to start a life with the love of her life, but for the consideration and affection for her father, she stays back and sacrifices her future and love life. The story here is only looking at human values in relation to family and love life. Here the characteristics of men and women have been highlighted in line with family atmosphere. Here family is been shown as a foundation of human life and the situations in the story is realistic and can be seen in many families in any community. The author here not only talks about family values but also gives out family circumstances and unfortunate situations people have to face in life. He shows people that life is unpredictable and many a times what we desired and dreamt off cannot be accomplished due to duties and our obligation to our family members. The author through the story shows the world that even young mind can think high and can bring about pride and dignity to a family. “Eveline” being the central character of the story convey to the world the meaning of love and family bonding in a subtle manner.
