Walt Whitman, however, wrote several love poems which are worth their read and are seen as classics nowadays. The specific feature of Whitman's writing is that it is not always gender specific. This is very unique for the English Literature. An example of this can be seen in the poem To a Stranger, where the author addresses a boy or a girl (Hess, 2008). This ambiguity has aroused a lot of public interest as to the origins of the poem. The other pieces of writing, however, are clearly devoted to a woman.
The theme of love is involved in the works of Willa Cather as well. Love in her writing is seen as carrying very profound and emotional shading. Cather was really deep into the love psychology of women and managed to picture it in a very deep and emotional way. It is of interest that the writings are usually woman-centered. The feelings are viewed from a woman’s perspective. Here is a sample from Cather’s “The Song of The Lark”: The spark in his eye, which is one’s very self, caught the spark in hers that was herself, and for a moment they looked into each other’s natures. …still saw in his wet eyes her own face, very small, but much prettier than the cracked glass at home had ever shown it.  It was the first time she had seen her face in that kindest mirror a woman can ever find”( Cather, 2009). Cather’s writing is very original in the aspect of approach to love and the role of woman. Thomas Stearns Eliot (September 26, 1888 – January 4, 1965) authored one of the most breath-taking pieces of writing peculiar considering the fact that it mainly involved carnal love. It is a matter of deliberation whether the episodes of the writing are mental recollections or real physical experiences. Other critics even suggest this being some type of symbolism. (Ames, 2011). The lines from the book are viewed as shocking for Eliot’s contemporaries. And I have known the arms already, known them all— Arms that are braceleted and white and bare (But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!) (Eliot, 1993) The theme of carnal love in this work has been evoked as a break of the contemporary standards of Romantic Literature. Another profound and unique interpretation of sorrowful love can be seen in Emily Dickinson’s writing. An interesting example can be seen in “Heart, We Will Forget Him” . This poem is exceptional in the way it treats one-way love. Dickinson captures the profound inner torturing brought by affection, love and rejection. In this short poem Dickinson vows to her heart, calling it a dear friend, telling him that "he" will soon face oblivion. It is of interest how she pictures the process when she tries to forget the man and remembers all the good associated with him while she is doing so. It becomes clear that this fight for oblivion is a losing game: HEART, we will forget him!    You and I, to-night! You may forget the warmth he gave,    I will forget the light. The writer then urges the heart to forget this man quickly, as this is the only way to cope with reminiscing him (Lorcher, 2011) Having mentioned all this, it becomes clear that the love story as it is has been often evoked in the English literature. It has, however, been viewed from various perspectives and so the approaches and plots are really ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

The Emotional Nature of Love in Love is a Fallacy and Romeo and Juliet
Love is something that is incredibly difficult to define. Every individual probably has their own, slightly different definition of love that fits them personally but may not apply to everyone else.
