The difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web
Introduction
The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW/ Web) are different although they are related. The internet consists of online protocols as well as World Wide Web. Several differences between Internet and World Wide Web will be illustrated in this report. Basically, the main distinction between the Internet and the World Wide Web is that internet is an immense system of connected international networks whereas World Wide Web is single type of service that is available in internet network. Internet is an electronic communications network and it is the basic system where the World Wide Web is based.
The World Wide Web is a component of the Internet that is devised to permit simpler navigation by making use of graphical user interfaces and hypertext linking different addresses. The Web is the user component of the Internet, founded on TCP/IP protocol technology to exchange information to and fro. Web is used in communication, accessing information, business, and for recreational functions (Jessup & Valacich 2008).
Basic differences
Internet is the substantial interconnection of computer networks within the world. It is the physical connection of the pathway between two or more computers. The World Wide Web is the universal name for getting into the internet through HTTP, hence WWW. Something.com. It is simply a connection protocol which is accessible within the internet, among many others. Internet refers to the hardware links and it is consists of computers, routers, repeaters, cables, switches, and other components that make up complete network. It is the physical layer whereby several protocols are normally used to make it possible to spread and exchange information allover the world. Other protocols that run on the internet are not popular like World Wide Web but they are also in use. For instance, Email applications don’t use World Wide Web to convey information because they possess own protocol referred to as SMTP, POP, and IMAP. Still, IP Phones which are used to call through the internet own protocols and therefore do not use World Wide Web.
World Wide Web is an application running in the internet. Servers house web sites which can be accessed using WWW while using HTTP protocol. The site can then be browsed by Hyperlinks that take someone from one page to another in addition to pages within another site. Whenever internet browser is being used, it is probable that WWW is being accessed. Therefore, internet of all appliances that makes up global network while the World Wide Web is a general name for HTTP which is a protocol that runs on the internet (Jessup & Valacich 2008).
The language of Subnetworks
In internet, every subnetwork is based on a definite digital language known as protocol. The protocols are important in document transmission and each and every protocol accomplishes a particular goal. Various subnetwork protocols in the internet are,
1. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
2. Network News Discussion Groups(NNTP)
3. Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTPs )
4. Email (SMTP, POP, MAPI)
5. File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
6. P2P Networking (P2P)
7. Instant Messaging (IM)
8. Telnet (TELNET)
9. Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
10. Gopherspace (GOPHER)
11. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), which joins all protocols collectively.
Every protocol is efficiently its own subnetwork with a specific purpose. HTTP is the protocol for World-Wide Web pages (Skau 2004).
World Wide Web’s Protocols
World-Wide Web has three main protocols, the Hypertext, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the Markup Language (HTML). HTML specifies an easy mark up language for expressing hypertext pages, while HTTP is essential for communication between web customers and Uniform Resource Locators (URL's) which are important in specifying the links between documents.
Technically the World-Wide Web center on three enabling protocols, the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) that specifies a easy markup language for describe hypertext pages, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) which is used by web browsers to communicate with web clients, and Uniform Resource Locators (URL's) which are used to specify the links between documents. When writing hypertexts, HTML is used where there is a simple language made of a few tags for defining valid constructs in the text. HTTP is the main protocol that is used in communication. In order to give a quick response time required for hypertext applications, HTTP which makes use of just one trip between the customer and the server is utilized. Through HTTP transfer, a document request is sent to the server. The browser then specifies the weights of every document category to notify the server regarding the desirability of various document categories. While responding to the request, the server returns the document to the browser through a format that is suitable to the browser.
Internet’s main Protocols
There is Internet Protocol Suite which divides internet procedures into a layered structure of protocols. These layers communicate to the scope in which their services run. On top is the application layer which is the space for the application-specific procedures used in software application. Below is Transport layer which links applications on various hosts through the network with the suitable information exchange processes. There is also internet layer which enables the computers to recognize and trace each other through Internet Protocol address and enables them to link each other through intermediate networks. Finally, there is Link Layer which avails connectivity between hosts on the equivalent local network connection like dial-up link or local area network (Skau 2004).
Internet Protocol (P) is the major element of Internet model and avails addressing systems for computers that use internet. IP facilitates internetworking and fundamentally institutes internet itself. IP version 4 (IPv4) is the original utilized on the first generation of the present internet. It was devised to address about 4.3 billion internet hosts. A latest protocol version (IPv6) was created in mid 1990s offers widely bigger capacities and more proficient routing of internet traffic.
Every Subnetwork needs special software
For internet, various special softwares are needed. For instance, other than World Wide Web, to experience other protocol networks, more software like; Netscape News Reader, Azureus Torrent client, MSN Messenger and FTP Voyager are required. To use WWW, HTTP software product is required: a “web browser” such as Microsoft IE, Firefox, Opera, AOL or Netscape Navigator is needed (Skau 2004).
Conclusion
Basically, Internet is an immense public information transmission mode, established in the 1960’s. In general term, internet is an infrastructure of many cables and computers, but specifically, internet is an amalgamation of numerous digital subnetworks which share the cables and computers. Conversely, the World Wide Web is the lone principal and most common subnetwork on the internet. WWW was developed in 1989 and is based on hypertext transfer protocol, a language that permits the user to hyperlink to other public web pages. There are very many public web pages on the World Wide Web.
