IMPLICATIONS OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY Name Institution Professor Course Date Implications of Computer Technology Introduction Computer technology has become integral to a modern lifestyle at work, in recreation and social networking; however, this convenience can be problematic for some individuals and may lead ultimately to addiction. Therefore, personal lifestyles have undergone radical transformation under the influence of this technology but not for the better. In the modern society, technology plays a critical role to the extent that it has become part of human society and interactions. For instance, technology is now critical in the transmission of information from one target to another. On the other hand, technology has become a hindrance to individual’s privacy rights and freedom because of the increase in surveillance. The purpose of this research is to examine positive and negative changes as well as transformation of technology on our lives with the intention of understanding the dark-side of technology. Positive Changes and Transformations of Technology in our lives It is essential to note that technology has become a critical aspect of human society to the extent that it runs in the veins of the society. In most cases, technology acts as the fuel driving the human society hence an integral part of daily encounters and interactions among individuals. Technology has positive effects on the society. For instance, technology is essential in the automation of processes within the contexts of industries as well as household activities. From this perspective, technology has been essential in the reduction of the cost of operations through executing duties and processes, which would require numerous individuals to execute at increased cost and time. In addition, technology has been on the forefront in the reduction of the risks to human life. This is through introduction of machines to automate diverse processes within the industry. The impact is massive to the extent that machines now execute duties and processes, which are not feasible for human beings thus an opportunity towards reduction of risks or life-threatening encounters beyond human capacity. Some of these technologies include robotics as well as artificial intelligence in the course of space exploration and mining activities. Similarly, technology has been ideal in the transformation of modes of transport thus networking of technology and transport. It is critical to note the role of technology in the generation and development of the modern-day automobiles. Robotics is an element of technology enabling individuals to execute huge amount of work under minimal force. For instance, robots are now available at residential homes to aid taking care of the babies while their parents are at work trying to make ends meet. In addition, robots are available at industries to facilitate execution of diverse duties while reducing the cost of operation as well as enhancing effectiveness and efficiency in handling the needs and preferences of the consumers. Technology has also been critical in the case of data storage, management, and retrieval thus effectiveness and efficiency in sharing and acquisition of information across the globe. Technology has been the onset of the digital age, which enables individuals to communicate and interact effectively as well as efficiently across the internet. Individuals have the opportunity to work from the comfort of their residential homes. It is also possible to acquire goods and services without the need to visit stores and retail outlets to satisfy the needs and preferences of the consumers. Technology has been a revelation towards improving the provision and delivery of health care products and services in accordance with the needs and preferences of the patients. Integration of technology has also been critical in the improvement of educational facilities and processes (Amy, 2014). For instance, students have the opportunity to exploit online learning activities and degrees to aid their busy schedules as well as minimizing the costs of attending traditional learning institutions. In addition, students have the opportunity to attend online class while exploiting valuable resources across the internet to handle their educational goals and targets at the end of every educational year. Students also engage in valuable interactions and engagement with the students and lecturers in the course of obtaining and submitting their assignments. This is an illustration of the positive change into education by technological advancements and developments. Similarly, health practitioners have the perfect chance to exploit technological advancements in the course of improving the quality of services and products in accordance with the needs and demands of the patients. There is also an opportunity for the patients to obtain online monitoring of their health under the influence of video coverage while interacting with health practitioners. This has been ideal in the improvement of effectiveness and efficiency in the health delivery in accordance with diverse needs and preferences of the consumers. Nevertheless, there is the dark-side of technology in relation to transformation of our personal lives within the society. Negative Changes and Transformations of Technology in our lives One of the negative changes of technology is the essence of addition. Technology has been an integral part of the human society to the extent that it takes most of our time in the form of addition. The most addictive element is the issue of video games. Children tend to overplay the video games hence exposing the addictive nature of technology. According to Peter, (2014), the situation gets worse since some children (extreme) tend to take about 18 hours a day to play the video games. Such children prefer not to go to school because of lack of engagement in the educational system in pursuit of their educational goals and targets. On the other hand, such children tend to exploit artificial highs of diverse kinds to keep mentally alert in the course of engaging in the gaming challenge. The addiction is so compelling that children create a fantasy world where they tend to neglect themselves as well as those around them this forget critical issues such as eating or washing their clothes and bodies. In extreme cases, such individuals fail to leave their bedrooms and avoid engaging their friends thus the concept of social isolation. This is an illustration of the negative hallucination by technology leading to the negative implications on the personal lifestyles and encounters within the society. Technology contributes to addition in relation to increased engagement in the online gambling. According to Dunn (2014), online gamblers behave like kids in the candy stores. According to the research article, there have been increased numbers of calls to the toll-free help line for the New Jersey Council on Compulsive Gambling following the initiative of state’s online gambling. From this perspective, technology contributes towards addicting individuals to online gambling thus limiting their engagement in other activities. The outcome of online gambling and addiction might include loss of one’s all financial resources in pursuit of satisfaction. In addition, online gambling ensures that individuals develop unique social skills limiting their interactions and engagement with other society members thus the need to acquire help in order to handle and overcome such encounters. Some might argue that online gambling is a source to make more money in comparison to the traditional gambling contexts (Fisk, 2014). Nevertheless, online gambling makes individuals to avoid engage in their needs and responsibilities thus inappropriate for the development. Technology has been an essential element in uncovering deeds that might go against the legal systems by the government. For instance, governments have been on the forefront on exploiting surveillance to counter-attack crime and acts of terrorism. In addition, employers have been on the course for implementing such actions in the course of handling their needs and preferences such as monitoring or increasing engagement of the employees. Nevertheless, this approach has been an issue of violation of the privacy rights of the employees as well as other citizens under the watch of the government. One of the issues relating to this approach or impact of technology is the essence of ‘big brother watching’ on the actions of individuals within the nation. The act of technology has been essential in the way in which individual now live their lives with the intention of avoiding portraying their true characteristics because of the fear of surveillance technology. According to Kellaway (2014), companies now tend to use technology to spy on the employees at work thus disrespecting their personal position and privacy rights. Technology enables HR departments to evaluate how long the employees take to get to work as well as how they behave while handling the duties and responsibilities. The eventual data is vital in the determination of which employee to promote and who to fire. The approach has been under critical scrutiny and public debate because of the potential impacts on the growth and development of the employees seeking to handle the needs and preferences of the consumers at the end of the fiscal year. There is need to respect privacy rights of individuals thus the essence of informing individuals on the act of monitoring their actions under the influence of technological advancements. Technology has also been a tool towards cheating as well as execution of other immoral actions within the society. According to Ihaka (2010), Facebook, which is one of the popular social networking sites, is being blamed for the growing incidents of divorces. This is because bored couples focus on hooking up with their ex-lovers as well as childhood sweethearts. These attributes demonstrate the impact of technology in transformation of lifestyles of the individuals within the society. Individuals tend to cheat behind technological advancements because of the opportunity to secure their information and communication from their spouses. From this illustration, technology continues to become a myth in relation to interactions with the society because of the potential and actual negative implications affecting the lifestyles of individuals to the negative. There is need to evaluate the usage of technology in the modern society as well as interactions of the individuals while exploiting technology as one of the integral part of our lives. Conclusion Technology is one of the critical aspects of our lifestyles in the society. However, technology seems to portray both positive and negative changes in relation to interactions and communications among individuals within the society. For instance, technology contributes through reduction of risks, automation of processes, and improvement of education, health, and business transactions while reducing the costs of executing activities within the society. On the other hand, technology has had negative impact on our lifestyles. Some of the negative contributions of technology include increased incidents of cheating, addition on online gaming and gambling, and excessive usage of surveillance thus depriving individuals of their privacy rights.
