Wireless Local Area Network Wireless Local Area Network represented by (WLAN), is a network that operate wirelessly and act as a link between two or more devices that are compatible with the wireless system. This type of technology has played a very vital role in simplifying networking without major interruptions by allowing simultaneous linkage and resource sharing within a given area whether an office or a home. Sharing of numerous resources has been realized including; video and audio streaming, internet connections, file sharing and network printers. This type of procedure has become quite dominant because with computers carrying potentially diverse operating systems as well as marginal hardware, users have changed their habits of using the lone functioning computers to networks operating on compound computers. More laptops have continually attracted massive sales compared to the desktop computers because many people have turned away from the use of wired connections to WLANs. Users can easily connect to any internet network wherever they are without any difficult, whether at home, school, office or bookstore. This article seeks to examine how the WLAN operates, its importance in the society and the impacts it has brought. Wireless LANs in the Office The most suitable solution for a network administrator is network in all respects. Cable installation in every workstation is no longer necessary nor is it a requirement. Wireless networking sets ground for many businesses meetings to be carried out impromptu in such places as cafeterias, courtyards or wherever the partners are comfortable with and deem it is the right time for the meetings as well as provide LAN for business applications such as light file sharing, communication and conducting research. Wireless LANs in the home With massive reduction of prices of wireless networking, it has become a routine for wireless networking products to be transported from workplaces to homes. Wireless network offers easy and free lifestyle to in terms of conversation, exchanging data and music or video with user across the Internet and around the world. Home users can develop a wireless network out of an existing wired network and wirelessly spread the scope of the Internet all over the home on numerous computers, making it more appropriate for everyone to access the internet. Types of WLAN Technologies Several networking technologies have developed over time, therefore, resulting to systems such as Narrowband, spread spectrum, frequency hopping range and direct system spread band. Narrow band This is a type of technology that uses a particular radio frequency within the range of 50 cps to 64 Kbps for file transmission. Spread Band This system of technology was initially developed purposely for military use, it permits for more bandwidth by recurrently modifying the frequency of the communicated signal, therefore, spreading the broadcast across several frequencies.
