Module 11 – WAN design & implementation WAN network simulation WAN technologies currently used within the UK and Europeanmarkets There two WAN technologies which are prevalent in UK and the entire European market. These are ATM and SDH/SONET. SDH/SONET was developed in two decades ago by the ITU-T. The technology was developed as an advanced version SONET which was common in the US. The technology brought about harmonization in terms of WAN standards. SDH enables the trasfer of a particular of converging local area network with different bitrates. To achieve multiplexing, a tributary stream is inserted in containers that are predefined to come up with one stream. The removal and addition of LAN are achieved with the use of add and drop function that enables revomal of a particular LAN without the need to demultiplex the whole WAN stream. Initial type of SDH is synchronous transfer module 1 (STM-1). This is a riley frame that has 155.52 Mbits/s bitrate. It has a rotation rate of 125 microseconds. Every bite in the payload is 64 kbit/s channels. SDN netwrok ca transmits various categories of digital signals through pre-defined distributary signal mapping. The other prevalent WAN technology in the European countries is ATM. Asynchronous data trasfer is network technology designed for both loacl area network and wide area network. It has the capabilities of handling both voice and video traffic real time. The ATM architecute uses switches for configuring logical circuit in both data stream interface, maintain quality of service. The part of the bandwidth which is not used in a series can be used for a different purpose. Broad networkk system such as telcos uses ATM technology. The fourth topic is about how a network is managed so that the functional requirement of the organization can be achieved. This entails the use of different technologies like FDDI and CDMA/CD to ensure that the data network traffic flows well (Gerla, 2010). The fifth topic is about the tools that are used in computer network and lastly is the security of the network both physical security of the network components and the security of the data that is send via the network. It also give consideration to the latest technologies that can be used to ensure that the data that is in the network is save from intruders and hackers who has the intention of causing denial of service. The fundamental invention about the ATM technology is the use of 53-byte cells that have fixed length. The property allows the users of ATM to create high speed cricuits, since it is simple to process data packets with known size. The limited packets of ATM enable splitting of video and vioce data stream frequency adequate for data transmission real-time. Another unique thing with ATM technology is its capability to link WAN and LAN protocols, enabling seamless transmission between LAN and MAN. Mulptiple protocal over ATM is applied to direct TCP/IP and IPX protocols and at the same time retain the quality of service offered by ATM. WAN Emulation enables the linking between token ring and ethernet producing a summary of data packets that is converted to 53-bytes cells ATM. Limitations of the existing frame-relay infrastructure The current frame relay infrustructure was developed multi-directional communication. It is not adaptable to Oder network equipment. Some adapter must be added for it to accommodate unidirectional connection. The relay lack an automatic alternative routing therefore the system is broken down, a dual connection or N+1 protection is installed. This makes the relay unreliable as it can cause denial of services. The flexibility of bitrate is very low. The overal bitrate is not meet duringf VC bitrate. The system also has low flexibility when it comes to switching. It only accommodates the bitrates specified by the SDH/PDH standards. The system does not have data traffic automatic bandwidth allocation. Cost effective replacement technology- Gigabit WAN The most appropriate and cost effective replecement technology is the Gigabit Wide Area Network. This is a WAN technology that uses Multidimensional Applicatios and Gigabits Internetwork Consortium. This technology used a backbone with bandwidth of 204 Gb/s and every part of the network has a host that communicate at more that 1Gb/s. the type of MAGIC network that can be implemented is AN2. This is an architecture that was developed by DEC research center and is availed by digital equipment corporation. AN2 IS A WAN that uses advanced ATM technology. The AN2 technology is the most suitable and cost effective because of infrustructure that were used in the existing network are used. The nework will be made up of a number of switches, linked interconnecting interswitch that operates at 1 GB/s. The main host will be DECStation 5000 hosts with AN2 host adapter system connected to every switch. The host will be communicating through the switches and MAGIC sites located remotely though WAN gateway. The interface of MAGIC WAN The gateway will be used to support the B-ISDN ATM traffic between different local area networks and the WAN at 622.08 Mb/s. the existing AN2 Gigabit interswitch lline card is the basis of the architecture. The host and the gateway support the WAN linking mamanement procedures and sending of signals. There have been different research limitation are attended via application and implementation of WAN interface. The most prevalent test that needs to be attended to be the linking of wireless WAN environment and WAN that is connection oriented. The procedures for connection setups that facilitate circuits thata re viartul for Internet protocol diagram traffic that travel from two different LAN through B-ISDN WAN. The procedures targets PVCs and SVCs.The proposes network will connection based. The post suitable media is the fiber optic. Proposed WAN Architecture The WAN will use AN2/SONET gateway. These are hardware deivices which links the DEC AN2 local ATM network to B-ISDN network. The function of the gateway is to faciliate a transmission media for data between the SONET ns the AN2 basing on the WAN backbone. The AN2/SONET gateway has the following components: Operation at the capacity of the SONET on the WAN part through fiber optic linkage. Oporates in DEC SRC AN2 local ATM switch by linking to the packplane of AN2. It also has dynamic bandwidth allocation experimental techniques. It also has test models for interoperability between wiress and wired protocal such as TCP/IP protocol. Call perimeter negotiations and call setup test signaling protocol which measures the performance network. Proposed WAN gateway arcitecture Enterprise Composite Network Model This is a network model that was developed to avail a deta; iled network design strategy. The model defines or gives specification on the network scalability. The model is meant to provide a guideline to network administrators on how to manage the network system. This network model is a blueprint that guides the network designers to simplifyy the development of large network systems. It enables the developers to implement hierarchical, modula approach of designing the network. ECNM can be used to analyze the logical, functional and physical features of a network system. This will simplify the design process of an enterpise network. An enterpise composite network model is made up of three key areas. These elements are linked as modules. This implies that the company needs a way of trasfering the knowledge to the upcoming employees (Sauter, 2010). The information technology managers are realizing that a WAN which is ECNM centered is a critical asset in improving and making the work of the information technology seen. This researh paper tries to explore factors which users versus IT departments view as most important in a corporate intranet Enterprise campus- this entails the packages needed to creae a robust network campus. The proposed network will use this module to connect all the institutions to the main WAN network. The campus enterprise faciliatets scalability, flexibility and availability. Enterpise edge- this module enables the link from different featurs on the enterpise network edge. The functional area of the enterpise edge sieves traffic from different edge modules and directs them to the campus based enterprise network (Ballart and Ching 2011). The network model has all the network features for seure and efficient linkage between the remoote locations, mobile users, and internet and enterprise campus. The service provider edge is the last module which is a functional area that is not applied in the enterpise edge. This module is added to facilitate communication with various networks with the aid of internet service providers and WAN technologies. The application of ECNM in my network will be basically in the campus module to form enterprise campus functional area module that links with other functional networks. Inn the ECFA, the users of the network gain access to the entire network system. The system is a web baseed dicision support system. Most organizations depend on the chief information officers to process the collected data and present it in a form that can be understood. They are also expected to spearhead innovation that solves the challenges faced by the organization. The chief information officers in turn, respond by suggesting a corporate intranet. This is a platform that ensures the organization’s prized assets are safeguarded, improve process work flow and link the users (Sauter, 2010). There have been several intranet features that people intending to set up a corporate intranet overlooks. The network component pivots the use of gateway that is managed in central place. The authentication that is based on the web and also sieves the data such that the users who are supposed to access general information. Visitors to the campus also make use of these gateways. There is at least one gateway in each section that is split according to geographical coverage. The number of users in each geographical area determines the number of gateways in each section. Determine which type of specific rules and electric signal will the computers that are interconnected use. The rules control the key features of the network such as access methods, cabling required, physical topologies data transfer speed. This is the protocols and the major network protocols that are mostly implemented are the Ethernet, A place such as the library requires five gateways since the population of the users that visits the library is high. The LAN that is meant to be used by everybody is connected using wire-specifically twisted pair since high speed is required the data traffic that goes and come from the general use network passes through the wired gateway. The deployment of the gateway is done using network operating system or ADF’s (Sax, and Thacker, 2010). Installing, configuring and doing the test of the hardware to be used in the network. The network hardware that is installed includes the network adapter, routers, wireless antenna for the purposes of wi-fi enabled devices and repeaters. Repeaters are placed at intervals of five meters so that the signal is very strong when it reaches the destination; these repeaters are connected to the access point in one end and the router on the other end ENCM integration in the network Fundamentals of optical networking The primary features of optical networking are the use fire optics as a transmission medium. The fiber optic trasfers the communication signal in form of light eneggy. The signal is transmsitted in fibers which are coated with class. The need for a wider communciation badnwidth has necessited the use of optical networking. It provides a very high speed since the signal travels at the speed of light. The most sutable replacement for copper wires is the fiber optics for the backbone connection and wireless access points in the buildings. Wireless gateway is installed to provide wireless accesspoints. The network component pivots the use of gateway that is managed in central place. The authentication that is based on the web and also sieves the data such that the users who are supposed to access general information. Visitors to the campus also make use of these gateways.
