After trying to establish a single 3G standard, ITU, at last, permitted a family of five 3G standards, which are part of the 3G structure namely IMT-2000: - Three standards based on CDMA, namely CDMA2000, WCDMA, and TD-SCDMA.
- Two standards based on based on TDMA, namely, FDMA/TDMA and TDMA-SC (EDGE).
The CDMA standards are the most important 3G standards.
  1. WCDMA - Wideband Code Division Multiple Access:
It is a technology for wideband digital radio communications of the Internet, multimedia, video and other capacity-demanding applications. WCDMA is approved as a standard by the ITU under the name IMT-2000 direct spread. It converts the data into a narrowband digital radio signal first, and then it assigned a marker (spreading code) to distinguish it from the signal of other users. WCDMA uses variable rate techniques in digital processing and it can achieve multi-rate transmissions.
  1. CDMA 2000 - Code Division Multiple Access 2000:
CDMA was launched in 1995 commercially and it very quickly became one of the world's fastest-growing wireless technologies. While later in 1999, CDMA was selected as a standard for new "third-generation" (3G) wireless systems by the International Telecommunications Union. Many wireless service provider companies then upgraded the technology to 3G CDMA which resulted in better voice traffic and high-speed data capabilities. CDMA2000 1X technology supports both voice and data services over a standard (1X) CDMA channel and provides many performance advantages over other technologies. CDMA2000 1X phones also feature longer standby times. And because it's backward-compatible with earlier CDMA technology, CDMA2000 1X provides an easy and affordable upgrade path for both carriers and consumers. The higher-speed or higher capacity data services, a data-optimized version of CDMA2000 called 1xEV-DO provides peak rates of over 2 Mbps and "always-on" packet data connections. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

...from whichever sources. Wireless technologies are also associated with the use of 3G and 4G networks especially the mobile technology. These have, in addition, provided a powerful way of reaching the unbanked and the under banked. These categories of people are now able to bank their money conveniently. Cheque deposits, balance enquiries, and account transfers are done using wireless technology. This enables financial institutions to provide cost effective, convenient, easy, and efficient customer services which translates in customer satisfaction (Gratton, 2007). Wireless technology has also greatly...

...? Wireless Technology There are over 5 billion mobile phone subscribers in the world. These cellular phones offer services that are made possible by cellular phone companies that offer carrier technology which enables information transfer through sound, data and even visual information. Many cellular phone companies have emerged over the past few decades but few have managed to become household names. The few we acknowledge are namely, AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and ClearWire. All of these use different technologies to offer credible services to their consumers in individual ways they feel fit. These technologies offered, of course, have their pros and cons which will be addressed and compared in this study. All these organizations... to...

...Radio Waves and Spread Spectrum Technology Used In Wireless Networks In general, all available wireless products generally fall in three types of wireless technologies; infrared, narrowband microwave Radios and spread spectrum radios. Infrared is an invisible band of radiation that exists at the lower end of the visible electromagnetic spectrum and is most effective when a clear line-of-sight exists between the transmitter and the receiver. Direct-beam infrared offers data rate from 1 to 10 Mbps and diffused-beam infrared offers data rate from 1 to 4 Mbps. It is a short–range technology and can be used to set up peer-to-peer...
