Developing Parking Systems Executive Overview Information Systems is a computer based system that helps individuals organize and manage departments. Information systems include software that assists people to improve their decisions and efficiently achieve their targets. Information systems have developed over the past years to have diverse use. Management Information Systems, plays the role of focusing the attention of an organization to technological systems. The systems help most organizations to realize their goals and business challenges. Management information has been used to improve parking systems in most many corporations. The principles of Management Information Systems in relation to car parking is to develop efficient car park systems. There is a current parking problem at MUN and it is affecting the operations of the organization. The parking spaces are assigned to specific individuals and they cannot be used by any other individuals. Furthermore, if the individuals is not available his or her parking slot cannot be accessed. The organization is looking for an intelligent parking system that will be used to address the current parking crisis. Management will help develop a method to improve transportation in the enterprise. On the other hand, intelligent car parking has been successfully used to reduce congestion near car parking areas (Juang, 2013). The parking area will help students and staff members at MUN. It will increase the range of parking convenience and vehicle security in the institution. The individuals at the faculty will be able to share their parking in the institution. This will allow them to take advantage of the different peak periods. Students will be able to park once and do their activities efficiently. Assumptions The parking area will controlled by a barrier at both the entrance and the exit. The barriers will have CCTVs installed on them that captures the occupants of the vehicle. Vehicles will be issued with parking tickets that allows shows the time of entrance. Individuals will use the ticket to pay for the parking online or manually. Wireless sensor networks are used globally to collect and monitor information for the purpose of decision making. They can be used in different environments to monitor information for car parking. The sensors are low cost and are deployed in a car park field whereby each parking lot has a sensor node. The sensor node monitors the activities of the car park slot and sends a message to a database. The database is accessible by the upper layer management system that analyzes the information. The upper management system is entitled to find vacant car park slots, occupied spaces and give a report on the results. The system evaluation shows that implementation of the car park system yields positive results. Intelligent car parking systems can be combined with mobile devices to provide individuals with effective services. Individuals with smart phones can locate their vehicles in the parking area in case they forget where they parked. The system has the capability of identifying each and every parking. The database can be updated to allow it to be used at any institution with a parking problem. High level design The case study has to be applied on the MUN car park slots to help them solve the crisis of a car park. The main objective is to come up with a method that will investigate how effectively car parks are utilized. There is an increasing car park problem that needs to be addressed in order to accommodate more cars in the institution. Visitors often have a difficult time accessing car parks in the organization. Findings have shown that most individuals are not happy with the current car park system in the enterprise. The goal of a good of an intelligent car parking system is to help the management find a solution to the paring crisis. The management of MUN hopes to: Help car users to easily and quickly find car parking slots in the area. Assist drivers to find the entry and exit of a car park system effectively. Increase the number of available parking spaces in the parking area. Finally, the management hopes to increase the security of vehicles on the premises. Application of Intelligent car park systems The design of the intelligent parking system is developed to locate car users to free parking spaces on the entry of the parking area. At the entry point the car users are expected to get tickets that will have information about their cars and time of entry. Sensory nodes provide data vital data on surveillance that is useful in making a decision on car parks (Juang, 2013). The use of wireless sensor networks is important in car parks because other ideas can be integrated. Adoption of cameras at the entry point and at each parking slot is crucial. The cameras at the entry point will be used to check the details of the car for security purposes. Cameras will be placed strategically within the car park area to monitor activities in the car park area. The cameras will placed to get data on individuals and vehicles to help improve the security of the car park area. The information captured by cameras is used by the executives to facilitate easy parking management. The parking area will be categorized into lanes that will be numbered to help individuals locate their vehicles. Wireless sensor nodes are placed in the parking spaces to monitor the parking conditions at a moment. The information is relayed to a database that analyzes it and provides a feedback to the computers at the entry point. The information will help the customer to easily access the available parking in the area. The management will get information on how many vehicles were able to access parking at a particular time. The sensors can provide data that can be used to alert the management of illegal parking in the area. The system records the amount of time that vehicles have spent in the parking area. In addition, the information obtained, can be used by the management to perform a payment system as a parking fee. The amount obtained is applied to the management of the parking area. Coin meters installed will help in the collection of parking fees in the area. The diagrams illustrate the relationship between the sensor network and the core application. The sensor nodes are deployed at specific locations in a parking and they collect information. The collected information is transmitted to a gateway through wireless communication. The gateway is attached to a database through the internet. The system is developed to be object oriented and driven by events in the car for processing. In this intelligent system, there are 5 events that occur and they are: timer, field management, status of driving and the manner which cars enter and exit the car park. In relation to, field management indicates the activities that the manager performs (Juang, 2013). Features Motes, sensor boards and gateways are the main hardware components used to assemble a wireless sensor network. Motes consists of a radio chip and a processor that are powered by batteries. Motes are used to attach different sensor boards and communicate with other sensor nodes. Sensory boards are attached to the motes and gateways provide a gateway for the motes. The sensor nodes will help to provide reservation in the parking area due to the ease of directing cars users to other free parking spaces. The gateways will provide the motes with the ability to acquire sensory data. The data is acquired on a standardized computer platform through a serial interface. CCTVs will be among the features on the intelligent parking system. It is a technology that allows visual surveillance in an environment. CCTVs will be distributed in the parking area and on the barrier at the entrance of the parking space. The cameras will take pictures of vehicles that enter and exit the parking area. Implementation Challenges. Based on the description of intelligent parking systems, wireless sensor networks are important to the success of the project. Wireless sensor networks are a promising technology that enhances intelligent parking in most corporations (Juang, 2013). There might be loss of public space to create an effective parking system in MUN. Land is lost in the creation of the parking area. The city is enterprise is turned into a concrete jungle and the land used cannot be recovered. The system is efficient and considerably cheap to install, but the maintenance cost is high. Repairs and other involved cost are high and it requires full time attention which involves additional labor. The demand for handicapped parking increases the cost of implementing the intelligent parking systems. The parking slots of handicapped individuals increases the cost of implementing the parking systems. There is no backup system in case the project method fails. MUN will have to incur losses in the case that the system fails. There will be a low turnover rate during the test of the project because of infrequent visitors. There is a problem of providing adequate parking for the needs of MUN. Adequate parking accommodates most individuals and saves time spent looking for parking. Parking spaces can be in an inconvenient place. This will affect the ability to retain customers in their premises. Solutions to the parking implementation issues The new parking system will provide a long term solution to the problem of parking at the institution. Intelligent parking system yields more results than most parking systems. Furthermore, it will enhance mixed use parking that addresses problems to most motorists. There will be coordination between the staff, students to address the needs of parking at MUN. On street pavement parking is applied to permit prices that can be reflected by prices at the curb. Reservation of a car park at a fee is important to the growth of the parking systems at MUN. Booing a parking space involves spending more finances on the parking space than the infrequent visitors. Managements consider reservation and coin meters to balance the parking area in most organizations. Individuals who make reservation find better parking and the intelligent parking systems integrates them. They have to specify the time they will use the parking to help in managing the parking better. Reservation is a good idea because it helps better flow of traffic in the institution.
