Introduction
Labor relations refer to the employment relationships that exist between the management and workers that facilitate in setting out the ground rules that governs the work in a particular company or a firm (Budd 3). Labor relation is greatly responsible for contract consultation and interpretation, collective bargaining, grievance administration, labor arbitration and mediation, management training, management and labor relationship building as well as strategizing (Budd and Bhave 51). Therefore, it is essential for the human resource managers to have excellent labor relations in their firms to avoid work stoppages, go-slow and low morale of the employees since problems and concerns of the employees about their work will be addressed effectively. Excellent labor relations will also facilitate successful future achievements of the firms, teamwork of the employees and innovation. This paper analyzes into details the importance of labor relations for the human resource managers.
Discussion
For human resource management to achieve the objectives of the company or business, it must realize the importance of the labor relations. Labor relations help the human managers to increase job satisfaction of the employees while decreasing their turnover. This will make an employee feel like he or she is a very important part of the firm which will result in employee loyalty and high engagement in the organization. Excellent labor relations by the human resource managers will help to save the business money used in recruiting, hiring and training employees since the employees feel satisfied with their job and hence the human resource manager will be able to maintain and retain the highly productive employees (Budd and Bhave 51). This is because the employees feel that their problems and concerns about the work are addressed by the human resource manager. This will also help the human resource manager to retain his or her employees when the company is facing financial difficulties as the employees are willing to stay in the organization even when the company faces financial constraints. Additionally, this will make the business or the company to remain competitive as the human resource managers value the employees input and hence the employees will come up with creative ways to solve the problems affecting the company (Budd 7).
Labor relations set a surface for a smooth working environment in the organization. When strong labor relations are created between the human resource management and its employees, it leads to high productivity of the employees. This is because when labor relations are not managed and promoted effectively by the human resource management, the employees will always tend to go against the policies of the organization. Strong labor relations lead to a better communication between the human resource management and employees who will greatly help to identify ideas for improvement of the company’s services and products (Budd and Bhave 53). This also helps the employees to come up with ideas to solve the company problems before these problems become very costly to solve. The better the workers feel about the company, the better the company will do. Bad labor relations by human resource managers damages the company leading to poor production in the company and thus human resource managers should practice good labor relations in the company since this will make the workers more productive.
When healthy labor relations is enforced by the human resource management, the company will enjoy and have uninterrupted production of its workforce. This is one of the most important advantages of healthy labor relations by human resource managers since they ensure that there is a continuous production in their companies. By so doing, the company will have a continuous employment for every employee starting from the top to the bottom ranking of the workforce (Budd and Bhave 53). Therefore, the resources in the company will be fully utilized resulting to maximum possible production in the company. There will be also uninterrupted flow of salaries and incomes to all the employees leading to a smooth running of the company. This creates good relationship with company’s product consumers and other industries in the cycle of production leading to a continuous flow of products from the company to the consumers (Budd 7). Once there is a continuous flow of products, the company will benefit from the mass consumption of its goods making it very competitive.
Healthy labor relations reduce industrial disputes such as workers strikes, go-slow tactics, lockouts and unnecessary grievances from the employees (Budd 9). Good labor relations also facilitate adequate expression and satisfaction of the job for all employees making them not to conduct industrial unrest since they feel that all their problems concerning their work have been fully addressed by the human resource management. Industrial unrest by employees is a reflection of poor labor relations by the human resource managers and thus human resource managers should make sure that good labor relations are created as this will promote co-operation and increase production in the company.
Worthy labor relations will lead to a whole mental revolution of the employers and workers (Budd and Bhave 53). This means that both the employers and the workers will think and work as partners in the company whereby the workers feel that their role as worker is recognized and they also recognize the authority of the employer in the company. This will naturally impact on the company production because each party is recognizing the interests of the other party. Good labor relations also aid in reduction of wastage in the company since there is cooperation between the employer and the employees and also they are recognizing each other. This means there will be no wastage of man power and man hours, machines and materials in the company leading to increased production with minimum wastage.
Good labor relations encourage the management to conduct training programs of its workers which increases the workers’ productivity. The company in turn benefits from the workers increased output and the productivity that is translated into higher production. Training helps the workers to succeed in their job and their current position they held in the company. It also helps the worker in preparing them for the future responsibilities in the company. This builds a great capacity for the company to achieve its goals. It also helps the workers to adapt and use the new emerging technologies and hence the employees will feel that their performance challenges in the company are addressed by the human resource manager making them to adjust to the new responsibilities and technologies in the company. Therefore, when human resource manager initiates good labor relations by conducting training programs it is translated to higher output of the employees (Budd and Bhave 54).
Strong labor relations by the human resource management improve morale of the workers. This means that the employees will work with a great zeal while feeling that the interest of the employer and their interest is one and therefore they will work towards a common goal such as to increase the company production. Every employee will feel that he or she is the co-owner of the gains of the company and hence the employer will realize that the gains of the company are not for him or her alone but should be shared generously and equally with all employees. In so doing, this will create a complete unity in the company and everyone will feel satisfied with what he or she is doing (Budd 9). These will positively affect the company production leading to mighty production that can produce even greater results.
Decent labor relations help to build trust between the management and workers. This makes the management to have a regular communication with the workers about the direction of the company, progress and strategy and the workers’ role in the company (Budd and Bhave 59). This will encourage the workers to provide help and inputs to solve the problems affecting the company. Trust with the management encourages the workers to even initiate voluntary working time for the company such as working during part time for the gain of the company. It also creates personal commitment to the work and hence the rate of absenteeism is greatly reduced. Additionally, decent labor relations promotes healthy working place for the employees (Budd 9). As a result the company will have healthier and more productive workers thus replicating to greater returns to the company.

Good labor relations by human resource manager in any given company are the base of the higher production with a minimum cost and greater profit. They result to increased efficiency of the employees, job satisfaction, high morale, uninterrupted production, less industrial disputes, a complete mental revolution and reduced wastages in the company. This is means that everyone in the company will be working towards a common goal such as to increase the company’s production. Therefore, it is essential for the human resource managers to efficiently practice labor relations since the success of the company depends on how they practice labor relations with their employees.
