Ethical Decision Making Case Study: Ethical Decisions Ethical dilemma refers to the of mind of an individual faced with uncertainty to make a choice when faced with various moral imperatives. In the particular case, choosing either of the options often results into transgression of the alternate option. There are various factors considered important when law enforcement becomes a subject of emphasis. Ethics, integrity, corruption, and compromise are important dogmas that co-exist and should undergo preservation at all costs in ensuring that the society adopts proper practises in the event of solving various ethical paradoxical issues. Ethical Issue Faced by the Character The character, a hypothetical middle manager, is aware of the fact that in the world, there are various circumstances that make an individual selects between what is considered to be ethically right and wrong. The character finds him in a challenging situation since he becomes victim of making an unethical decision. The principal fact behind the ethical issue is the fact that it becomes easy to make a rush decision or opinion which is unethical and in the end, suffer the consequences of the decisions that have been made (Blanchard & Peale, 2011). The action takes place in the subconscious mind where the individual does not realise the occurrence of the mistake. Upon preview of the action, it is then discovered that the individual made a mistake when at that time, it appeared to be the wisest thing to do. The manager in the book utilizes the five key principles of ethical power, which are perspective, persistence, pride, purpose, and patience (Blanchard & Peale, 2011). The manager believes that is still possible to conduct various business activities in an honest way and still become competitive in the business environment. The main character while performing right actions faces various barriers. The character insists on the importance of having integrity at the business or work place. The character clarifies the fact that cheating is not the ultimate way to guarantee success in the business place. The main challenges faced by the manager is how he can ensure that the business achieves their best results and stays competitive in the business environment while at the same time maintaining various ethical practises. It is quite evident of the fact that it is very challenging and difficult to conduct business without making any unethical decisions for the sake of the organisation and the company. However, these decisions always have a positive or negative consequence to the manager. Its application becomes evident where the manager has the capability to influence the winning of various tenders to supply various products. It would proceed with the dilemma in various ways. I would look at the key values that the company stands for. Majority of the companies have values that govern their present operations. Majority of the companies receive guidance from principles such as honesty and integrity (Blanchard & Peale, 2011). The success of the firm and the implementation of various policies depend on these core values. The managers promote these values. I would therefore stick to ethical business practise of promoting integrity. The reason is to maintain the company culture and tradition/. Even if the company is not achieving its objectives and there is a chance to practise unethical behaviour, it will stick to the principles bread by the company because it would also like my subordinates to use the same means to make it in the corporate world. As an individual, I thrive and cherish various values that would ultimately influence my decision. I value honesty, integrity, and hard work. These values will help me stay away from any form of unethical business practice. The major danger in practising unethical business behaviour, the individual risks making the company fail to achieve its objectives and it goes against all the rules of the company. The individual risks losing the job after making the company fail to attain its objectives. I would adopt the communism as a mode of decision-making. The reason as to why I will resort to the specific type of choice is that the decision will derive its basis from a consultative agreement (Blanchard & Peale, 2011). The decision made will be to the greater good of majority of the people because of the decision made cumulatively. When all the individuals responsible for the decision making process discuss the matter and come up with a valid conclusion, there is less figure pointing when the business lands into a problem. The most important guidelines that would promote ethical and moral behaviour of students in the program would be that, the students should at all time. I would also insist on the fact that the students should react to situations that they face with integrity and promote their individual values. The decisions made are not to exist out of selfish interests or gains. The decisions made should reflect the opinion and interests of every one. The objectives of the ethics committee would be to review cases of unethical behaviour and take the necessary action against the person who performed the unethical behaviour. The committee will be responsible for coming up with various rules that would promote ethical behaviour among the students. The committee will be responsible for auditing various decisions taken by the management to keep them always at check. The committee will be responsible for enlighten the entire student fraternity on proper ethical and moral practises that should be inculcated in their everyday lives. Our students should not be held at higher standards of ethics than other graduate students should. The essence of the program is to boost ethical values for every student in the institution and not in the program. It will be unfortunate if the program focuses its effort on a group of students as opposed to the students who are going to join the corporate world. It therefore becomes essential that the program stretch to cover the other students to boost the ethical and moral values of the school. Ethical Leader In the particular question, I am going to profile my high school head teacher Simon. He headed the institution for 15 years. The 15 years were marked with success based on the right decisions made on behalf of the school. I remember at one time when his ethical skills were tested. It was during the pre-mocks, an exam that was done and competed within many institutions. The overall champions were given numerous presents and the head of the institution promoted. He was approached by an individual who had the mock papers and wanted to leak the exams to our institution. We would have benefitted from the leaked exam but Mr. Simon rejected. He stood for values of integrity and hard work, which were the guiding principles of our school. Had he adopted the exam, we are uncertain of what would have happened in the end. I was able to determine that he was an ethical leader because he always rejected any acts of unfairness or unethical practises that would arise within on from without the institution. He rejected various attempts by teachers and external entities from leaking exams into the institution. It would have risked his career, jeopardized the core values of the school and the school would have soiled its name. The leadership theory commonly adopted is charismatic and communality where decisions are made from a consolidated opinion of various individuals. The interaction between the school head teacher and various other stakeholders is always official and formal. He does not compromise with any person who is found going against the ethical code of conduct. He is transparent and does not favour any parties. He believes in determination and hard work as principles of success. They cast a light when situations require them to be angered. They encourage and promote change when an individual expects condemnation Through my interactions with them, I have learnt that people respect you based on the values and principles you stand by. People, who also surround an individual, influence their character and behaviour. They influence their stands on various ethical issues, either positively or negatively. In the particular question, I am going to focus on various models of making ethical and moral decisions. These models are utilitarianism, Kant’s Categorical Imperative, Communitarians, and Altruism. All these models have similarities and marked differences. They all focus on the making of proper ethical and moral decisions concerning the greater good of the people in the society. The differences arise from what influences the decisions they make on the people and the consequences thereof. The process and the mode of determination of the ethical issue also mark a key difference. For instance, when Using Kant’s perspective, it relates to a scenario where the society has adopted similar culture where one person’s decision affects everyone. Different perspectives govern how ethical issues are to be handled in a particular society.
