Essay Questions HRD 495 595 Spring Why has Internet recruiting become so important? How do employees conduct Internet recruiting? What are thedisadvantages of Internet recruiting? Internet recruiting has become a very important tool in hiring employees because of the way technology has influenced the way business is done. Thanks to internet recruiting, businesses are assured of a wider and more global reach. Thus ensuring that the best person for the job, regardless of his location in the world, is hired for the job. Internet recruiting also proves to be more cost effective for employers since they no longer had to pay for job placement ads in physical newspapers. A physical newspaper ad only has a limited reach when it comes to potential applicants while online job postings reach a global audience. It also proves to be beneficial to the applicants who no longer have to pay for stamps to send out their resume. They also do not need to make follow up calls in order to find out if positions have been filled. They wont even have to pay for transportation costs when it comes to the formal job interview. These can all be done electronically via the internet. There is a faster recruitment cycle in place when it comes to internet recruiting. Applicants for open positions can start streaming their electronic applications in within minutes of the job posting going live. Although internet recruiting indeed has its proven benefits, one cannot help but wonder about the disadvantages of the program. First of all, internet recruiting limits their applicants to only a select few who have internet access. Anyone without access to the internet is out of luck. There is also an over-saturation of employment websites that makes it difficult for companies to choose the best candidates for the job opening. Therefore, the number of applicants cannot be limited and specialized jobs will require the company to use head hunters. This type of employee recruitment also proves to be more costly for the company because they need to hire people to effectively screen and pre-interview the applicants who will then come in for a formal interview if he passes that round of screening. For those applicants who are located overseas or in a different part of the country, this would mean the extra expense of traveling to the job location just for an interview. Describe the relationship among job performance, selection criteria, and predictors in the employee selection process. In order to create a conducive work atmosphere, a company must be able to hire individuals who fit the company profile of a hard-working employee. The employee selection process is of the utmost importance to a company because the human resources department has to help the company decide who among the possible applicants for a job opening fits the profile of the job description and as such, should be formally offered the position. Proper employee selection can help to make or break a business depending upon how employees perform on the job. The effectiveness of a person on the job dictates whether the person being considered for the job will actually put in the hours required in order to properly accomplish the requirements of the new job. Proper employee selection helps the company maximize their employee potential. This serves as the base for HR in doing its own employee screening. The predictors that are commonly employed when it comes to gauging the worthiness of a candidate includes the applicants educational and work experience, personality characteristics, ability, and motivation. The assumption of employee selection explains that individuals can be successfully paired up with the job that is right for them. What learning principles would you consider in designing a training program? I believe that one of the most important learning principles that I should consider when I design a training program is the principle that the best way to develop an employee is by enabling him or her to learn and develop personally through job exposure and training. future employees or current employees success on the job is enhanced by whole person development alongside the traditional training methods used by companies in their training programs. I would therefore have to make sure that I carefully assess the training needs of the individuals then create a specific development program for them that allows them to consider their individual styles and personality. All of these will of course result in the successful training of the employees. Why is succession planning important? What key mistakes are often made in succession planning? Trainers identify succession planning as a process that requires managers to identify, asses, and develop their staff in order to make sure that the employee will stand out as promotable in the company hierarchy. By successfully identifying the promotable individuals, the company is assured of being able to tackle future challenges through training and development that offers them skills and competencies that will help them deal with the future world of business. These are the people who will be the future leaders of the company which makes their succession planning and training all the more important. It is important to note that there is a misconception within companies and the employees when it comes to succession planning. Some key mistakes made in succession planning is caused by the tunnel vision that some employees tend to have. The employees tracked to be on the program normally fail to recognize the succession planning program as a core senior management program that can lead to future success within the company for the employee and a better future for the company he works for. Some companies also try to do too much too soon so that their employees are not in a position wherein they would be capable of helping to finally lead the company into a new future. How can managers make appraisal feedback interviews more effective? Appraisal feedback is of the utmost importance to managers who need to ensure that the members of his department are functioning at the optimum level. By offering his staff feedback on their quarterly performance, he is able to give them an accurate critique of their shortcomings on the job and how they can improve on their weak points. By doing this on a quarterly basis, the department head will be able to keep an open channel of communication with his people. This will result in effectively using daily feedback to prevent any escalation of potential problems within the department. Making sure to integrate the employee personal appraisal in the discussion will help both the manager and the subordinate recognize their short comings which in return, will help them function better as a team.
