Introduction Saving Private Ryan is an America epic war based movie produced in 1998. This movie was directed by Steven Spielberg. This movie has outstanding evidences that signify the brutality of Second World War. The movie is based on American invasion in the land of Omaha Beach. The purpose of U.S. soldiers to enter the region was to rescue a private first class paratrooper James Francis Ryan and relieve him from his duty as per the president’s request. The story describes the confrontation of U.S soldiers against the soldiers of Germany. The German soldiers had huge artillery, mines and powerful machine guns all over the place. The U.S soldiers had to infiltrate the region and reach to Ryan to send him back to Washington because his three brothers died fighting the Second World War and Ryan was the only support of the family. This mission was handed over to Captain Miller. The movie shows extreme violence to make viewers understand the situation. Critical Analysis and Review In the beginning of the movie Germany soldiers keep shooting the American soldiers as they land from their boat. Somehow Captain Miller survived; gathered his team and went ahead in search of Ryan. On his way he neutralized some of the German forces and kept moving towards his mission objective. From the beginning of the story itself Tom Hanks as Captain Miller was casted and the effect of the world war was observant. The story began on the land of Omaha beach where American soldiers were shot brutally by German machine gun nests and infantries. Captain Miller managed to survive the attack somehow and forwarded towards his mission. Captain Miller and his team managed to neutralize some of the German soldiers and continued his search for Ryan; who had lost his three brothers in the war. He was only one surviving in the family so orders were to rescue him and send him back to America. The visualization had tremendous effects showing the significance of rage over humanity. Humanity was at stake during the advancement of the war. The participation of many powerful countries made it worse for the human society. People were fighting for nothing just to follow orders of their superiors. Wars may have action but the effects of war can never be appreciated. The actual event was portrayed in a very specific manner. Every character in the story resembled to the actual person in action. Tom Hanks showed awesome performance during this time. Acting on behalf of a strong character like James Miller was a tough job. But the story was portrayed in a fabulous manner and the film was nominated by the Academy Awards. The image of war as we see and hear seems interesting because of the action and twists behind it. One can only experience reality if he or she is standing at a war in actuality. The film was presented extraordinarily from the starting to the end. Everything shown in the film was implemented from the real happenings. The violence shown in the beginning was heart trembling. Every incident nicely depicts the brutality of wars. At the end of the story in the film; Ryan was found by Captain Miller and he was informed about the situation and orders to bring him back to his country thanking for his service. However Ryan decided to stay there with his fellow members and guard a bridge that was crucial for Americans. This shows peer loyalty in military men and their brotherhood. Ryan being less in age the courage he showed was tremendous. Astonished by his decision Captain Miller decide to take control over them and stand against the German artillery and machines. This shows the courage of facing death among soldiers in order to obey the orders given to them. Captain Miller put land mines in different places and formed a strategy to save themselves and the bridge. They got ready to defend the attacks that were about to come from the German forces. The German soldiers had every kind of equipment including heavy artilleries, battle tanks and several soldiers to destroy the bridge so that Americans in the land could not get reinforcement. However their plan failed as Captain Miller stood in front of them implementing his strategy. They managed to kill many soldiers and destroy the tanks. At last Captain Miller lost his life saving the bridge. Soon American P-15 Mustang destroyed the artilleries and other tanks and took over control. Captain Miller respected his order saved Ryan’s life and lost his own life. The scenario was pathetic and the ending showed the effects of the war. The film was based on the fact that fear ends for an individual if he is determined to follow his will. The circumstances of the war at real time would have been worse than visualized in the film but the conditions almost resembled the real war situations of 1944. The brutality emerges from the visualization of the film. As the film progressed the killings in the battle field grew worse and the shoot outs were shown in a pathetic way. For an example from the movie “When Captain Miller neutralized one of the German artillery. They started bombing on them and even attacked by tanks. From the movie scene some of the soldiers could not even be found after death” (Palmer 31). The historical events emerged during the Second World War were deadly. There were many instances where innocent people were killed because of lack of political balance which caused the war. Children were killed brutally without any mercy. During this period there were some people who took initiative to keep some infant and homeless children safe. Humanity was at a stake. In the movie Saving Private Ryan we get to see the life of soldiers in the battlefield and their courage apart from that there were several other incidents happening all around the world. The lives of women in remote areas were made worse along with their family. Different countries participating in the war used their maximum power to win over another. The winning or losing would not have made much difference for a country but the war that happened definitely showed the face of humans in the society. The film featured in various ways but in a single war field tried to convince people the ill-effects of wars. The movie was not made to see the heroic performance but it tried to give a moral that wars are good for nothing. The soldiers from Germany also got killed and it was a pathetic time for everyone. The real incident behind the story was that two brothers of Ryan were killed in New Guinea and third brother of Ryan got killed in the Japanese war. The General staff confirms that fourth brother was missing in the French countryside and orders a team of 8 soldiers to bring him back safely. Though it might seem that the film is based on a single war instance and a story in favor of a family but the truth is that apart from Ryan’s family there many other families facing a similar kind of scenario. It was happening all over the world. Hence the film visualized corresponds the World War II in actual. Conclusion From the above instances and examples it is clear that Saving Private Ryan is one of the most interesting movies that were based on the World War II. The movie was brought forward with huge violence to depict the reality of the war occurred during the period and the hatred in the heart of people. It is one of the best movies shown against the Second World War. Works Cited Palmer, William. The Films of the Nineties: The Decade of Spin. New York: Palgrave Macmillan. Read More
