At the time America began to be populated by Europeans, the written discourse had become the accepted means of communicating ideas, so it was only logical that the brave new American world would be written about and defined by its various inhabitants. Too, the advent of a truly new country, far from the Old World, created a shared experience among the settlers that bound them together more effectively than their European nationalities could do. Add to that the fact that most of the people brave enough to make the journey across the sea to the strange lands of peril and promise were by nature curious and creative, and it is relatively easy to understand how American literature emerged as an integral part of the development of the United States.
What is interesting about the literary development of America's incongruity with her political development is that it allows one to trace the creation of America as a country, an experience, and ideology through these texts. “From its historical beginnings, American literary criticism has assumed that literature produced in this nation would have to be groundbreaking, equal to the challenge of the new nation, and completely original … Inevitably, perhaps, it came to seem that the quality of ‘Americanness,’ whatever it might be, constituted literary excellence for American writers” (Baym, 149). In other words, American literature was first and fundamentally an expression of America and only secondarily a work of art in its own right, so integral was the role of literature in shaping the notion of America.
The American landscape was an utterly new thing, waiting to be discovered and invented. Its newness and the possibility inherent within that newness were its fundamental characteristics. “It is a mischievous notion that we have come late into nature; that the world was finished a long time ago,” Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in “The American Scholar,” buoyed by the optimism of the American landscape. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
