In 1945, Britain, still had the largest empire in the world and was granted independence by 1964. In 1952, it became the third state in the world to gain an atom bomb. Moreover, it became a member of international organizations, such as United Nations and held a seat on the Security Council.

Britain was a founder member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).Political History in the UKIn 1945 Labour party won general election as they got more seats than their opponents. As a result, the coalition government ended as Labour leader Clement Attlee clearly won majority seats over Winston Churchill. In addition to this, the year also finished with celebration of the victory in the World War II. In 1948 National Health Service was established and Labour government made significant changes that promote medical services.

Moreover, a free paid system was introduced to those who registered with a doctor. Labour Leader Clement Attlee was re-elected as Prime minister in 1950. Later British troop were sent to support the USA in the cold War at South Korea. In the year 1951, Winston Churchill won the general election under Conservative party and became the Prime Minister for the second time at the age of 76. He promoted foreign affairs, reduced pressure of Cold War and maintained good relationship with the USA. He once said that “We see nothing but good and hope in a richer, freer, more contented European commonalty.

But we have our own dream and our own task. We are with Europe, but not of it. We are linked, but not comprised. We are interested and associated, but not absorbed” (Britannica.com). After the death of George VI in 1952, his daughter Elizabeth II became the Queen and the Prime Minister supported her. In 1955 Winston Churchill at the age of 80 went on retirement due to the health issues. His successor was Anthony Eden who won the general elections in 1956. Furthermore, British power station was turned on for the first time.

However, Egypt decided to nationalize the Suez Canal and American intervention made Britain and France to withdraw and Egypt got the canal back. As a result, it placed America higher over them. In the year 1957, The Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden resigned due to Suez Crisis and was taken over by Harold Macmillan. Besides, Britain tested its first hydrogen bomb and joined to Soviet Union. The Conservatives leader Harold Macmillan won the general election with great margin of votes in 1958 and gained 365 seats, whilst Labour gets 258 seats.

In addition to this, in 1963, the French president Charles de Gaulle announced publicly the denial of Britain’s application to join the European Common Market. After the resignation of Harold Macmillan, Sir Alec Douglas-Home became the prime minister, but in 1964 Harold Wilson won the general under Labour party with 317 seats, whilst conservative got 304 seats. In 1965, Labour government introduced Comprehensive education system, the Education Secretary, Anthony Crosland gave to local districts the right to replace all the existing grammar and secondary modern schools in order to create more comprehensive schools (Theguardian).

Another important issue is that one of the capital punishment for murder, death penalty was effectively abolished. Labour party became more powerful in the parliament in 1966 by winning more seats in the general elections, 364 seats whilst conservative got 253. The year 1967 was remarkable for making abortion and homosexuality legal. In 1970, Conservatives won the election where Edward Heath became the prime Minister and won 330 seats and Labour got 278 and in 1974 he tried to go into coalition with Liberals but was rejected.

A new Prime Minister became James Callaghan in 1976. Nevertheless, the first female Prime Minister from the Conservative party was Margaret Thatcher in 1979. In 1983 she was re-elected by majority seats and reformed the trade union and in 1987 she won for the third time. Finally, in 1990 she resigned and a new Prime Minister became John Major, and in 1994 the Church of England ordained the first woman priest (Bibliography bbc).In conclusion, United Kingdom has rich and iconoclastic history. It is a member state of different international organizations.
