It results in the inability of employers and governments to pay their employees, causing an increase in unemployment (Bernanke, 10).

However, there are some contrasts between the Great Depression in the 1930s and the Malaise of the 1970s. The great depression refers to the economic slump and the decline that was experienced during this period, while the Malaise of the 1970s refers to a period of economic stagnation, where not many economic activities were being undertaken (Bernanke, 17). Another contrast is the fact that the great depression was characterized by a fall in the stock prices as well as other prices of goods and services, while the Malaise of the 1970s, was characterized by increased inflation, higher prices for commodities, and a demand for higher wages, as well as the stagnation in business activities (Bernanke, 23). Another contrast is the fact that the great depression lasted longer and had a greater impact on the economies of countries, more than the Malaise of the 1970s.
