Task Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq Introduction Overthrow by Stephen Kinzer is a story of individuals who manipulated the political structure to their interest, and toppled crowned heads and presidents of their leadership. These individuals include business men, politicians and corporate. The countries whose leadership is toppled often suffer from long term disastrous consequences leading to a downfall of economic activities. This unit examines the coup détat, revolutions and incursion by which USA used in toppling foreign governments. The Imperial Era The imperial era refers to a period of revolution when America was laying ambush to Hawaii and Iraq. This was a period when Hawaii and Iraq were annexed by America through armed force. The rationale behind the annexation of Hawaii and Iraq by America was for commercial ventures. The Americans hired troops to aid them in the ambush process. Covert Action This refers to the secrets dealings that America was undertaking in their toping of foreign governments. Contrary to America’s acclamation of national innocence, history proves that America is an intruder in other states business (Kinzer 124). Invasions The invasion period can be described as the period when America was annexing and toppling foreign governments for their own selfish motives. The motive for annexations of nations by America was for economic and political gain. The toppling was done in-Oder to expand the America’s ideology, and influence to doing other things. Iraq is an example of countries that the America invaded. The cause of the invasion in Iraq was due to the military activities carried out by the then president Saddam. Events That Led USA to Overthrow Foreign Governments Various events precipitated America to cause the downfall of several states and nations. The events are invasion shattering success which motivated the Americans to believe in their policy of long government change. This was an era when the Americans were significantly driven by a sense of patriotism and religious enthusiasm. The Americans were also in rummaging around for new souk and raw materials. The period of invasion shattering success led USA to overthrow the foreign governments as they were constantly prevailing against those countries that they laid an ambush against. Secondly, the need for regime change led USA to cause the downfall of foreign governments, since they had their own ideologies to put into action. USA campaigned for Change in the monetary and political life, and did not hesitate to overthrow the foreign governments which became a constraint to their change process (Kinzer 83-84). Reasons for Depose of Foreign Governments by USA USA was propelled by a number of reasons to overthrow governments which were not theirs. The main reason for ousting of foreign governments was due to the urge of attaining economic interest. USA categorizes their economic interest to be driven by corruption and capitalism (Kinzer 3). According to the corruption hypothesis USA overthrow foreign governments to protect their state conglomerate. This conglomerate demands superior quality commodities at a low cost, and being state corporations USA official arbitrated. The intervention by the officials shifts the balance in the economic activities to their favor. The presence of corruption ideologies drives USA to overthrow foreign governments limiting them in their quest to acquire foreign resources (Kinzer 42). Secondly, USA overthrows foreign governments due to fights between democracies. USA overthrows foreign governments, which are not, friendlier to their interest as a party, though it may be a democratic government. A good example of a foreign regime, which was elected, democratically, but not friendlier to USA policy is the Jacobo Guzman heading Guatemala. Long Term Consequences of the Depose of Foreign Governments by USA The fight to depose foreign governments of their leadership reacted negatively and positively to the various parties. USA has several ways of achieving their interest by using other foreign governments, but in the process leads to severe and damaging consequences to the nations. There was a divided American opinion regarding the deposition of foreign governments amongst the Americans. Some Americans supported the deposition ideology while others based moral concepts regarding the intervention as baseless (Kinzer 84). The divided ideologies weakened the ruling political government USA, since different parties were cropping up to oppose the government’s decision. Secondly, USA security was weakened by a result of their intervention on the affairs of foreign governments. There were economical and political upheavals in those foreign nations overthrown by the Unite States. This made USA an insecure place, since there were threats from affected groups of a reprisal in USA. Thirdly, United States intervention into the affairs of foreign governments led to untold miseries to the nations. Brutal and unfair social systems have been reinforced by USA intervention in nations like in Chile. This resulted to citizens and government of such countries detesting USA ideologies notwithstanding its importance. Lastly, the use if military force for intervention by USA resulted to grabbing of lands by officials. The American troops overthrew various governments in the country, and this has resulted to the economic down fall of several nations like Iraq (Kinzer 305). Tactics Used for Depose of Governments in this Era and Why it was Used USA used various ways in their intervention on the affairs of foreign governments. It used the consortium in deposing foreign governments. A good example of a consortium used by USA includes the Central Intelligence authority (CIA). Governments like the Guatemalans government refused to consent to the Unite States policy, and their leader being democratically designated could not be easily ousted. America used the CIA to plan on tactics and managed in ousting the then acting president Jacobo Guzman. The operation used every available technique the relevant party, and even their acting president to make Guatemala consent to the American ideologies. Secondly, America used terrorism as weapons against foreign governments to instill fear in the government, apply their ideologies in those countries. America used religious affiliations, military and the nationalist to achieve their political and economical desires. Conventionally military force instills fear in the civilian population forcing the acting government to consent to the terms and condition of the invading nation (Kinzer 320). Thirdly, America used manipulation in convincing the manipulated nations that there was zilch erroneous with their intervention into their affairs. America used apprehensive individuals to influence the civilian’s opinion regarding an issue of interest to the populace. Deveral; the heads of states have served the America’s interest to stay in power. Fourthly, the American government used false treaties into overthrowing foreign governments. An example is the reciprocity treaty which granted the America control over the Pearl Harbor. These treaties were blended to suit the interest of the American ideologies, and cripple the foreign governments who were against the ideologies. The reciprocity treaty was used to snatch power away from the king Kalakaua dynasty. This prevented the monarch from exercising power against ministers who were supporting the American ideologies from being dismissed from the cabinet. Lastly, USA used cold war as a weapon for deposing foreign governments that did not consent to their ideologies. It was a war of the super powers, but they did not directly engage in the war but used other nations to depict their political and military might. These nations were fighting for the expansion of their political ideologies, and defending their homeland from invaders. The war was battled amid the Americans and the Soviet Union. Conclusion Conclusively, the America is not successful in its attempts of overthrowing governments of foreign nations, since it also bears some of the consequences of such an overthrow. Many states including the America have tried imposing their own leader with no success, since the leaders in most cases are not always familiar with the nation’s compatriots. America applied imperial era, which involved the use of military actions against rebellious nations, covert action and the invasion as processes to topple foreign governments that were not friendlier to their ideologies. American was motivated by the success of the invasions they were carrying, and this resulted to them toppling governments that refused their ideologies. Work Cited Kinzer, Stephen.
