There have been attempts to place Zheng He as predicting the emergence of China as a world power in the modern-day. Several efforts by the Communist Party early suggest that it wants “to signal to its own people that it has recaptured past glory while reassuring foreign countries that China can be strong and non-threatening at the same time.” (Kahn)
However, the Chinese efforts to present a one-sided interpretation of the explorer cannot be justified in this modern age of improved international cooperation among the world nations. It would be more advantageous for every nation to provide factual evidence to historical events and China, certainly, needs to present the objective facts in their attempt to make a better image of their fast. Historical facts and figures cannot be misinterpreted by any nation for its vested interest as there is no monopoly for any particular individual or nation over the truths of the past. The present criticisms by several intellectuals of the various parts of the world against the Chinese efforts to present a one-sided interpretation of Zheng He indicate the same. In conclusion, while China has every right to have a pleasing image about its present and past, this cannot be at the cost of historical facts. Read More

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Coleridge

...or trance of the spirit of Death-in-Life pervades the apparent compulsive nature of the Ancient Mariner's storytelling. The nightmare of being in a state of limbo never really leaves the Mariner except when he tells his tale to others, for example to the Hermit who advises him on what penance he should do and to the ambushed Wedding Guest to whom he shares his terrible story. The passionate tone of the poem which highlights horror, dread and fear on one hand, effectively renders an account of the supernatural. A critic, James Stephens described Coleridge's poem as "extreme, its fantasy is extreme, its knowledge of music and colour and pace is extreme" (quoted in Enotes...

Rime of an Ancient Mariner

...Alone on the Wide Wide Sea An Analysis of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner 'Rime of an Ancient Mariner' is primarily a work of imagination. For Lamb 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' is less 'a fantastical imagination and a drowsie dreame' than 'a continued allegory and a darke conceit'. (Lucas 191) The poem was close to Coleridge's heart and meant a lot for him, which is attested by the many times he went back to the poem for revision and for the glosses that he subsequently attached to it till the very last days of his life. Although the poem has a noted allegorical significance and has an overt morality, which although debated by some to be pedestrian, elementary and at times disturbing and morbid; the chief source... that this...

Ancient European Civilization Compared to Ancient China

...(Schirokauer and Brown, 2012). As a result of concentration in trade and religion, European civilization had no time for art and this came to develop later on. The other difference is that the different dynasties ruling China were concentrating on inventions and hence many inventions were developed during Chinese civilization. In Europe, development of different classes brought about competition and migration to other areas and hence inventions were not there but there was development of telecommunication systems to serve the different classes (Einsenstadt, 2003). The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

...The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Samuel Taylor Coleridge is one of the celebrated British poets of the romantic era. In 1798, he collaborated with William Wordsworth on a volume of poems that they called The Lyrical Ballads. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is part of this collection. In this poem there are two aspects of love that the poet dwells on - the love of God for all the creatures of the earth and the poet’s own love of the beauty that he sees in nature. Coleridge emphasizes the love that God has for all His creatures. He says God loves all creatures equally. ...redemption. Within the story of the ancient mariner, the character of the ancient mariner describes presumably his first trip on the ocean. This is assumed because of the strong doubt he experiences as the ship is shadowed by an albatross. As he describes a sea filled with icebergs, the mariner introduces the entrance of the albatross as a saving spirit. When he tells about the first appearance of the bird, he says, “It ate the food it ne’er had eat, / And round and round it flew / The ice did split with a thunder-fit, / The helmsman steered us through!” as if the bird was the reason for the separating of the ice and...
