Modern Political Ideas: The Basic Insights of the Third Way

The third way is on its way, starting with the termination of the welfare consensus that spread widely in the industrial countries until the late 1970s, the ultimate disgrace of Marxism, plus the very profound economic, social, and technological advances that brought out this idea (Demaine & Entwhistle, 1996, p 35). The basic insights or clear perceptions of “The Third Way” There have been several controversies concerning this policy in modern politics. However, a Third Way is not real or just, if it: Fails to empower people economically Keeps social and economic power, particularly over advanced technologies, controlled by an elite, Lacks logical principles and theories of economic justice to lead policy makers, Keeps citizens in status of total dependency on the state Lacks a scheduled system for eliminating the gap between the poor and the rich within the changing global marketplace, Remains trapped by essentially by income redistribution schemes, rather than encouraging systems that link prospective consumption returns to future wealth production, and Ignores the key roles of social tools such as capital credit, money, and central banking in deciding how all citizens can get access to economic power and assets in the future. From the above approaches of modern political ideas, we can picture a just third way, which goes beyond the outdated answers supplied by the left and right. It offers a new vision and optional model of development for world nations where they can succeed to the maximum potential within the global marketplace framework (Giddens, 2001 p 92-3). Power will always be within the society. We should accept the insight that, “power seems to corrupt, yet absolute power do corrupt absolutely,” so that our best defense against concentrated power being corrupt is manifested through decentralization of power. Moreover, if it is correct to say that “power necessarily and naturally follows possessions,” then democratizing ownership is important for democratizing power in modern politics (Donnison, 2003 p 54-6). We need a comprehensible vision of where third way is taking people to. People yearn for where they are headed, and one that offers a way of reviewing past achievements and plans for the future. Vision compels and inspires; it lends meaning to our sacrifices and endeavors to our lives (Tam, 1998, p 71). A clear third way leads to a society that is civil and good, where people treat each other as ends in themselves rather than as instruments; as entire persons and not merely as fragments; as community members , bonded by commitment and affection, rather than as only traders, employees, or fellow citizens. The third way must lead to a good society, though it is unclear at the edges. Trying to pin down the accurate meaning is not an easy task, but this is one of the major insights of this approach is that; it points to the directions that we should follow, excluding that it is neither ideological nor doctrinaire rigid system. This idea is not British, American, or the possession of any region, nation, or culture. It tilts neither to the left nor to the right, but runs between modern ideas of big state that administers significant social programs and broadly regulates the economy and laissez faire or libertarian unfettered market. Conclusion The Third Way debate has for a long time not been successful. Whereas states ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
