SEDENTARY BEHAVIOUR-RISK FACTOR OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE PREPARED FOR SUBMIT TO DATE Sedentary behaviour-risk factor of cardiovascular disease Sedentary behaviour is the lack of activity when one is seated. Doing things such as sitting in front of a computer, watching television, reading a book when seated or lying down. A state of inactivity results in a higher risk of suffering from heart complications such as stroke. 1. The target of this public health promotion are the Aboriginal and Torres Strait island adults aged 18-60 This category is composed of the working class who spend most of their working time seated as blue collar workers are seated 8 hours of the day while white collar workers are seated 10 hours of the day.in the morning they are seated in cars and buses while going to work in the morning. After a hard day’s work they spend the same amount of time that the used in the morning while seated when reporting to work. Once home they may relax to a chair watching their favourite programs on TV, or read a book. Although they may be relaxing the method is counterproductive as the person spends most of their time in a sedentary position as compared to other age groups. Cardiovascular disease is used to refer to ailments regarding the heart and blood vessels.in 2011 Australia had a total of45, 600 deaths related to cardiovascular conditions. The condition is known to be high among persons living in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island. (Australian Bureau of Statistics. 2016). It is estimated that in the years 2014-2015 69,600 persons living in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island had suffered from a heart related disease. This makes up more than a quarter if the population in aboriginal and Torres Strait Island. Adults between the ages of 18-58 are the most at risk from having a stroke, heart attack /death of heart muscles. The number of health cases reported in the aboriginal and Torres Strait island region has steadily increased over time and this can be attributed to the time that people spent in sedentary. Lifestyle choices that people make such as the time spent sitting in front of a TV, seated behind a desk at work or the time spent seated inside a car are all factors that contribute the ones risk of cardiovascular disease. The modernisation and the availably of technology has presented a real problem as people tend to move around less and spend most of their time seated. This is considered efficient but poses a health risk. Luckily he sedentary behaviour of a group can be changed by adjusting the behaviour that they people around time spent in a seated position. 2. The aim of reducing the sedentary behaviour present in aboriginal and Torres Strait islands is for the betterment of the health in the community. Reducing sedentary activity is important in order to reduce the risk of heart related diseases. A few practices can be used to ensure that the risk of having heart related problems. Eating lunch while standing, having periodic breaks when reading or watching TV to walk around, using a stand up desk and using stairs instead of an elevator an walking o cycling for short distance travels.( Caspersen, 2012). In 2016 a total of 1.6 million people had died from heart related complications while another 12 million has suffered cardiovascular complications. The initiative to reduce sedentary behaviour would greater assist the general publish in their ability to prevent cardiovascular disease since they are able to have better blood circulation around their hearts. (Australian Bureau of Statistics .2015) Thief development will require that new practices such as eating lunch while standing or putting breaks when reading or watching television in order to have a short stroll. These minute exercise inserted into their daily live can greatly assist them to have better health. Sedentary behaviour is associated with the larger population of persons ages 18 to 60. With this initiative the Australian public will be able to prevent cardiovascular complications by knowing symptoms and having appropriate behavioural adjustments in time. These changes would assist in preventing the risk of one having cardiovascular disease or symptoms. 3. The objectives of the health promotion would be to improve the quality of health. The implementation of the program would result in the improved health of the target population of Australia. When the quality of health is increased the risk of health complication reduces greatly. Adopting a hearty lifestyle will be in complementation having a better health as good health can only be maintaining a healthy life style. The program would facilitate the adoption of positive health behaviours in the community through education and health awareness. Creating new behaviours that they society can adopt into their daily lives without affective their day to day culture and practices .assessing health risks and behaviours that work against the better health of the community (McClellan and Kessler). To raise awareness on the harming effect that sedentary behaviour has to personal health. Most people are unaware that the daily practise that they follow may seem enjoyable but contribute to the time they spend in a sedentary position.by giving the person that chance to calculate how much time in a day that they spend seated will give warning to the luxuries that people reward themselves with. Developing policies that the health agencies can adopt and put into use within the community. Supporting and enhancing the access of individuals to health services within their communities. Developing the health services available to the community and allowing the support of government health initiatives. 4. The promotion is a tertiary perspective of the management of public health. The program associates to work with external agencies apart from the mainstream governmental ones making it a tertiary institution.by working with the governmental an non-governmental agencies such as charities and foundations the promotion is able to be promoted by many organisations who have interest in the Australian health sector. The functioning of the promotion as a tertiary entity does not limit the promotion to specific areas or codes of practice. Working with different organisations allows for funding and broadcast over the target community of aboriginals and Torres Strait islands. Working with nonconventional partners such as radio stations, magazines, school, businesses and the health corporations the promotion is able to create awareness to a wider range of people by piggybacking on various forms of awareness and educative programs that are made available and effective in the community (Faulkner, 2015). 5. Additional stakeholders can assist the promotion and can fast track the success and increase the efficiency of the public health promotion. Partnering with stakeholders in any initiative leads to a successful promotion. The stakeholders give access to resource and information that could not be gathered nor implemented by any single organisation. Consulting the community on the practices that they can be assisted to implement and advices on the dangerous practices will be important in the formulation of policies that would be effective in the change of sedentary behaviour in the community. Framing an advertisement is a key aspect for the promotion of any brand that seeks to have a lasting impact on the general public’s opinions and memory. Designing an educative, inspiring yet entertaining logo for a brand is necessary to make a lasting impact. The logo has to be relatable to the viewers of the promotion. The logo chosen was that keep your waist strait and heartache at bay. These catchy words have the educative aspect that they people of Australia can easily understand and relate to. The Torres Strait islands are islands none the less with ports. The locals would be used to seaside activities such as sailing and boating.it would be common knowledge, to keep at bay would mean that the boat or ship kept at bay would not have access to the shore (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2016). The keeping waist strait would refer to the inability of one to be seated as their waits is straight and implies their upright stance. Thus relating the heartache to the bay part of the metaphor would mean that a person standing or engaging in an activity while not seated would greatly reduce their chance of suffering from heart attacks and strokes. 7. Making people aware of the health promotion will serve to assist the target audience to get the best out of the public health promotion program. The awareness method of how sedentary behaviour influences ones risk of having cardiovascular complications would mean that using a channels that is cost effective and widespread in the Australian region. Entertain the public with stories after they come from work with a story of how a person who practiced sedentary behaviour and how it almost cost them their life. Further stating how they changed their behaviour and adopted healthier life styles would serve as a wakeup call to other people on the dangers they expose themselves to. Having volunteers go from one place to another giving their life stories and educating the public on sedentary behaviour and healthier lifestyles can greatly improve the level of awareness. By using social media to bring light to the situation and dangers of sedentary behaviour and healthier life choices. Making educative videos to display such will make impact as nearly 87% of all persons in Australia have access to a social media account. (Matthews, 2015). 8. Evaluation is a key method to measure the success or effectiveness of a program. By asking questions such as: how many? Who was involved? What were the outcomes? And how much did it cost? We can be able to determine how much effort was put into the promotional campaign. The information can be collected by surveys, questionnaires, review of public statistics i.e. hospital records, tape-recorded interviews and databases on clinical data can be sought in the survey. In the survey an interviewer may conduct face to face interviews with health officials with the severity, frequency and number of cases before and after the campaign was launched. Conduct group interviews where a generalised opinion and information can be given by the public who is the target of the promotion. Using the data the analyst can be able to determine did behaviours change? Who was responsible for the change in behaviour? And when did the behaviour change occur? The information from the interviews, focus groups, comparing and contrasting, interpreting patterns and case studies can be used to generate a formal report on the effectiveness of the campaign as whole. (Daniel P Kessler.2012) By having a written document the failures and success of the promotion will be highlighted in the analyst’s report.
